I'm not, but a suggestion if you are going to try and make it to save money it may not be worth the complete stress and cost of tools needed to embellish the cake and not make it look homeade. Marsh bakery makes beatiful cakes and they are sooo inexpensive!

No, I am as crazy as you though...and am considering making it myself. However, I plan on cheating.I am going to order different size sheet cakes from a grocer, without icing.I plan on assembling the cakes myself, and icing the cake myself. I also plan on trimming the cake and making the filling for the cake.I will be using white icing and using real flowers to decorate the cake in between the tiers. There are books at Michaels about cake making. You should buy one.The pans you need to make a nice big square or round cake in tiers are like over $80 just for one large pan...that is what brought me to the conclusion that actually baking the cake is not worth it. But you can save tons on decorating. But, if you want a complicated decoration or fondant...you prolly need to read up on that too or consider having o professional do it. I heard there are cake decorating classes too, maybe you could check those out.

my family secret, my mom makes eveyones wedding cakes just to save them money. She gets box cake mix on sale and add yogurts etc... there are lots of recipes put there to make good box cake mixes. SO that is not the hard part she has cake pans and a leveler from eBay. She and i have been to many wedding decorating classes . That is the hard part. As long as you want a simple cake it is not as bad as it sounds even with fondant. My mom starts 2-3 days before the wedding so she is not up all night ( just like the pros). If it is a large wedding she makes sheet cakes and has them in the back and most of the guest do not even know they are getting a piece of the sheet cake. My mom and i took two free cake decorating classes and read allot that is all. We practices on other occasion cakes like birthday, retirements etc.. I am not crafty and people swear a pro does my and my moms cakes

My mom made her friends wedding cake about 15 years ago(so i dont have a pic on hand)....But what she did was got a book on how to make a wedding cake, how to decorate, etc. She then praticed about 3 times....the first cake was for a small bridal shower, she made a scaled down version of a 3 tiered wedding cake and decorated it, the next practice cake was for my younger brothers 4th bday(about 3 weeks before the wedding), There were lots of people at this party so she made an almost full size 3 tiered cake and decoated with trains for my brother. WHat i am getting at though is by the time she had practiced those times the final cake was not only yummy but look fab! So remember practice makes perfect and maybe enlist some help from your mom or some one else close to you! Good luck

Their is no way I could do it, however my mom did for my first wedding. She rented the cake pans, they tend to be expensive to buy them. We found a picture of the cake i wanted and she bought the stuff to do it with and it turned out beautiful. I'm not sure where she got her receipe for the cake and icing at, but i'm sure you could do a search on line and find lots of great recipes.

I wouldn't do it. A woman at the church I grew up at makes cakes so she did mine. I hadn't have had that, I would probably have just gotten sheet cakes from the grocery store.Good luck. You should probably have a back-up plan.

I've made wedding cakes for friends and myself, but I took a cake decorating course years ago. You need to have some knowledge of crumb icing, cake construction, cake decoration, etc., in order to do such an important cake. The easiest think to do is use mixes but do special fillings and icings. If you use a name brand mix, it's as good as a scratch cake; you get the special effects from the filling and the icing/decorations, and that's where you want to spend your time. You need to know what you are doing so you aren't stressed out for your wedding.
