Based upon your career field and experience, the best camera is a 35mm. Nikon or Canon 35mm cameras can be found used on craigslist. You will also want to take a couple of photo classes at a community college.Later when you have learned how to use your camera, you may want to buy a DSLR that will use the same lenses as the 35mm.

Since you want a DSLR, a good place to start would be with the entry level DSLRs! Canon offers its Rebel series and Nikon offers a D40 series. Many people prefer the Canon because of a lens compatibility issue with the Nikon. See my source for a great place to research these types of cameras!

You want a digital SLR? Expect to spend at least $450 for a new SLR with lens and then the prices go up from there. At the low end, you have the Pentax K100D, which is around $450 to $470 new with lens. Then you have the Nikon D40, Nikon D40x, and Canon Digital Rebel XTi.Above that, there's the Nikon D80.The next tier is the Nikon D200, the Fujifilm S5 Pro, and the Canon 40D.Cameras begin to get much more expensive above this; above those cameras, you're into the $2,000+ price range for body only. For a beginner, I'd look at the Pentax K100D, the Nikon D40, and the Canon Digital Rebel XTi, just because of pricing. As you are starting out, the easy thing to do is start with the standard "kit" lens, which is typically an 18-55mm. If you go with the Nikon, you can go for the 18-70mm AF-S lens as an alternative or the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 HSM lens as a third party lens alternative.Starting out, expect at a minimum to pay $450 for the Pentax and upwards of $800 for the other cameras, depending upon lens choices.
