I would like to make some extra money and I'm fairly good at photography. I've done a couple of jobs already. One was for a child's birthday party and the other was a series of portraits. I have only a Cannon Powershot and a Nikon N65, but they both take wonderful, crisp pictures and my printer is made specifically for photo printing. I have great editing software as well, and have edited wedding pictures and engagement pictures (they were taken by other amatures)to the satisfaction of 3 different patrons. I was thinking of taking some photos of friends and their children, and trying to go through word of mouth, as well as putting up some flyers. Do you think a flat fee of $25, in addition to individual costs of pictures/packages, is too much or just right? For an 8X10 I'd charge $3.50, for 3 or more they'd be $2.50 each, 2 5X7's would be $3.50, a sheet of wallets would be $5.00. Does this sound too expensive? I'm going to put together packages as well, I just haven't gotten that far.I wanted to ask here so I could get a broader view of what people thought of the prices, etc.. Thanks!

Honestly I think it sounds a tad too much. Starting off how about just charging a little more than what it would cost to print at Target/Wal-Mart? I think it only costs like $0.35 there.

Your price may be too low. You will need to factor in other factors such as your fuel to get to the shoot, the cost of the supplies such as paper etc . . . Research what others are charging. For instance, you may be able to shoot actor headshots for $200. A Headshot is an 8x10. Obviously you shoot a large number, during a fixed period. This would be considered portrait photography. You can also sell photos to magazines. There are books at the library in the reference sections that provide information on many magazines and how to submit it.Research image galleries that allow submissions by individual photographers. People are constantly looking for photos for ads, websites, etc . . . Image galleries allow you to license (sell) people the rights to use your photos. You still remain ownership of them, but allow others to use them. Here’s one library that allows you to do so.http://www.istockphoto.com/index.phpIf you’re looking for models, a good website is One Model Place. Just as you are building your photo business and resume, models are building their portfolio. Many models will work for free in what’s called TFP (Trade For Photos). They will model in exchange for photos.http://www.onemodelplace.com/search.cfmVisit the professional photographer supply stores and learn from them. Walk through the store, look at the equipment, magazines, talk to the staff, . . .Also, take community college classes on photography. The classes will cost $30 ish and you will get the same training or better that other schools will charge you $1,000 a class for.Good Luck!
