My wedding's going to be an afternoon tea reception, with just little finger foods, tea & coffee, cake and glasses of bubbly (high tea). It's not a sit down affair, should i still have favours for the guests? About 150 people will be invited, my original thoughts were to have either Sugar shop lollies with our names in them, or otherwise personalised M & M's in little cellophane bags to hand out as they left? I'm more than happy to not do them & save the time & money if it would be appropriate? Let me know your thoughtsActually i'm an Aussie! we sort if stumbled accross the reception idea & really liked it. I only thought of the M&M idea because i've never seen it done over here, but i didnt realise it was so expensive either

Its completely up to you if you wanted to do one, but personally i would prefer an edible favor like you have suggested. although the personalized m&ms are pretty expensive for the amount that you would need, so maybe just m&ms in your wedding colors or custom bride and groom cookes are cute too.

Don't give them out if you don't want to.If you do, I would do something like sugar stir sticks (for the tea) with a personal note. Or you could do little bags of loose tea for each person. That would be super cheap.

It is a nice gesture but not necessary. Most wedding favors usually end up being thrown away anyway.

That will be fine. For my wedding I gave out blue and white Hersey kisses wrapped in tulle with a white ribbon and personalized tags. I really like the M & M idea. I think that's really cute.

Favors are never a requirement, so if you'd like to skip them, then go ahead!I like the idea of giving guests a little something to go home with and I think something edible is a good option that doesn't have to be expensive. I gave out chocolate-covered Oreo cookies. They were a big hit with my guests! They were decorated like these strawberries:http://tinyurl.com/3wusd6

You can always do a charity donation. The only favor I really remember was when a friend gave away potted violets her father grew for all the guests. Don't waste your time and money with something everyone will look at for a couple seconds and say, "Thats nice."

well favors are always nice.but if it's something temporary, like food, although the gesture is sweet, it won't last forever and i'm sure your guests would understand you saving a bit of money.it might be cool to have something they can cherish forever. =]

I think favours at a wedding are a nice gesture, especially if you put some thought and meaning into it. I've seen couples give out little bags of coffee, because they met in a coffee shop. Another couple I know gave out tree seedlings, because they are huge environmentalists and tree-lovers.Since an afternoon tea, maybe you could give out teabags or little tins of loose tea. Have you ever seen those honey sticks? If not, I've pasted some links below. Maybe you could tie 2-3 honey sticks to the tea tin with a ribbon.

Do what you want to do and can afford to do!! Force things are not any fun to give or for anyone to receive!! Especially since most favors are left at the venue!!

Since you seem to be doing something similar to me but mine is with an asian twist, I will share my idea. We found this idea http://www.marthastewart.com/good-things/tea-favors?lnc=6634fa5661cee010VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&rsc=collage_weddings_wedding-favor-tea_p2but didn't want to do it because we thought it would cost too much. But then, we found this wholesale site and found these http://wholesale.dollardays.com/detailview.aspx?itemid=324166&prodname=wholesale-asian-tea-cup and they were perfect. You have to login to see prices, but they were very inexpensive (I'm talking less than a hundred for about a 100). They also have these http://wholesale.dollardays.com/i338043-wholesale-ultima-small-coffee-cup.html which might fit your theme better as they are simpler and more european. We intend to fill ours with some loose tea of various kinds. Also, depending on your budget, they also have loose tea balls like these http://wholesale.dollardays.com/i290502-wholesale-tea-ball.html I really hope all of these ideas help and good luck with your wedding!!Edit: just wanted to add, I logged in and the asian cups are 96 cups for $56.64, the white cups are a ridiculous price 72 for $18.00!!! And the teaballs are 48 for $61.92, so a bit more expensive. They also have favor boxes and packaging such as these take out boxes http://wholesale.dollardays.com/i344132-wholesale-chinese-take-out-boxes-frosted.html for 240 boxes at a total of $40.80. Another idea if you do the white tea cups is to paint them (or find someone who can) so they are truly personal.Edit II: Oh, and just to answer your other question, favors are never required of the host. Do not feel at all obligated to have them. Most people understand the costs associated with weddings and would never expect you to break the bank just to give them favors. We are having about 100 guests and the only way we will be having favors is if I can get them all, including any packing and decoration for under 100 dollars. That is why I love that wholesale site so much. I figure, you are giving these people free food just to have them come celebrate your special day, that is more than enough. Good luck again!

Hi. Favors are always optional. You must be in the UK. Wow! I would absolutely LOVE to go to a reception like yours. Very different than the normal U.S. nightime receptions that I go to.Anyway, IF you want to do a favor....either of those would be fine. But, if it was me, I would save my money and time. If you do decide to.....please don't waste your money on personalized m&m's. No one will really notice....believe me. Just get m&m's in your "colors" (if you are having colors) and keep it at that.Good luck! It sounds lovely.
