We get the two words from the French verb se fiancer, which means to become engaged.
The male partner in an engagement is called the fiancé, and the female is the fiancée (the accent goes over the first e).
Both words are pronounced the same, but there are two accepted pronunciations for either term: fee-on-SAY or fee-ON-say.
