What's so hard to make a cake with people dressed up in sweats and a whistle/stopwatch around their neck?

I have seen "special" made wedding cake toppers, if you use a search engine you should be able to find it ... unfortunately they are expensive.

I had a few thoughts run through my head. Do you have a baker making the cake? 1. Instead of the usual scalloped edge or white rolled icing balls have the baker make them into sports balls like minature basketballs, baseballs, tennis, football, soccer, etc.? If the baker doesn't want to sculpt them you can probably find them from a party supply store since I've seen them on cupcakes. Just snip off the picks.2. If you are willing to go for the "cartoony" look a custom cake topper can easliy be made using Polymer Clay from the craft store. Customized cake toppers cost several hundred dollars.....sometimes up to several thousand! A five pound box of sculpy and the tools to work it will run you twenty bucks tops. All people are is beanshapes for the torso, two "snakes" for legs and to more for shoulders slighlty pinched at the top. roll a ball for the head. Fire then customize your blank person with whatever clothing and accesories you like. If you are a newbie it may take some practice but it's a fun little date night to do with your fiancee and can lead to some good laughs. Sculpy only dries when you bake it so you have as many tries as you need to get it right. They are easier to make sitting on the edge of the cake rather than standing up, but I think that's cuter anyway because they can hold hands and later, be perched on a bookshelf or your mantle as a gentle reminder of wedding day. If after a few nights you find you are truly hopeless post an ad at the local art college and any number of them will be begging to pick up a quick $100, possibly less.3. If you do have a baker talk with them. Most of your ususal wedding cake bakeries are talented with gumpaste, fondant, or parzipan and can easily make you the topper. They may charge a tiny bit extra but certainly not what a custom topper company would want to quote you. The only downside of this vs. doing it yourself with sculpy is that you won't be able to keep the topper. Since it is food/sugar based it probably won't rot but it will attract bugs into the home.

The easiest way to find something like that is to have it made. Check with local artists, or on www.etsy.com . Here's one I wish I'd found before my wedding:http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=6123405

I don't have the answer but what a fun idea!! I got married so long ago, all they had was the classic little plastic couple. The one we got were two brunettes, and my husband is blonde, so I painted "wite-out" on his hair to fix it. Seems like things have come a long way since then!!
