People say they are going to take their wedding invitations to the Post Office to get them hand-stamped. What exactly does this mean?

They are requesting the stamp is canceled by a hand stamp not by the machine. People will send the invites to places with romantic names: Valentine, Nebraska; Rose, Kansas; etc.Website: http://www.accuracyproject.org/towns-valentines.html

If the postal machine puts the postmark on the envelope, sometimes it looks bad. It can also tear. It looks better hand-stamped, although the usps workers will hate you. |

Hand cancelling is when you hand stamp the invites - this is done so that the boxes, envelopes used do not get ruined, smashed, or ripped. Also the calligraphy/writing on the envelope/package does not get smeared. This is done because usually machines will sort the mail and can cause damages and many times spend time & $ so they want to prevent this. The postal workers shouldnt get upset.

We had our wedding invitations hand cancelled. Call or stop by your local post office and see how they want to handle this. If they are very busy they may want you to bring them in 20 or so at a time, or they may request you come in at a certain time of day when things are slower. They will use a rubber stamp to put an ink print over your postage stamp. This is considered to be "superior" to machine cancelling when it comes to wedding invitations because it protects the invitations, wax seals, envelopes etc from damage which may result from the machine. It also helps cut down on all the ink and markings that are all over the invitation. If you don't have wax seals on your invitation and you aren't too picky about things, I wouldn't worry about it. We had very expensive invitations with hand tied bows and so we wanted to be extra careful, but I'm sure not one of our guests noticed that the invites had been hand cancelled. It just gives the bride a little extra peace of mind that the invitations may arrive to their destinations in one piece and unmarred.

A wedding invitation should NOT look like a piece of business or commercial or junk mail, it is a piece of social stationery. Hand stamping (a rubber stamp) means the post mark is put on "by hand" not run through a postal machine. Many of the smaller post offices will gladly hand-stamp wedding invitations but the larger and very busy post offices may not have the time or personnel.Answered by: A Certified wedding specialist / A Professional bridal consultant / A Wedding ceremony officiant

Some post offices will hand-cancel the envelopes, which means they aren't done by machine. Sometimes it's so it looks 'better', or some want it done via a specific town name. For example, in the province I live in, there's a town called LOVE, so they get a lot of requests at Valentine's Day, and have a special postmark they use.

Most mail is run through a postage machine. Look at an envelope you get in the mail, and this causes the squiggly lines that go over the stamp. Some people think that this looks messy. They want to make sure that these squiggly lines are perfectly parallel to the edges of the envelope. Or, they think that the machine makes the envelopes too dirty. So they hand stamp them.In my opinion, it's too much work for something that isn't worth it. Have you ever admired how nicely placed the squiggly lines are on an envelope you've gotten? Neither has anyone else. And unless an envelope is completely destroyed (which happens because of weather and transport, not the machine), then no one notices if the envelope is a little dirty. However, some wedding invitations are so thick and are an unusual size, so they have to be hand stamped because they won't fit in the machine. Assemble one full invitation and take it to get weighed at the post office to determine the correct postage...at this time, they'll tell you if hand stamping is necessary. They can do it for you, but it will cost you more.
