My hamster Henry won third place in a Pet Photo contest at our local APL. The prize is a $75 Pet Photo photography shoot. Tell me, how in the world is the photographer going to shoot Henry's picture when his wake time is after 10:30pm every night?I obey the cardinal rule of hamster care. "Never wake a sleeping hamster."I would appreciate any suggestions.

Ask the photographer if (s)he would be willing to do the shoot at night, after your hammy wakes up. If that's not an option, then you'll have to break your rule if you want Henry to have his photo shoot.

try to get him to sleep out in the open so you can take a picture of him. or try to get him to sit still long enough so you can get him.

What cardinal rule is that? I never heard of it. Also hamsters are not nocturnal like so many people believe, they are actually like us and our sleeping habits, they are crepuscular which means that they can sleep whenever and be awake whenever, I think the reason why people think and believe that they are nocturnal is because they are most active around dusk and dawn and the reason being for that is animals that see well at night don't during the day and vice versa, ones that see well during the day don't at night. That is when the hamsters in their natural habitat would have the best chances of foraging without having to worry too much about predators. Also as for waking a hamster, they can be really grumpy when they are startled out of sleep, say like if you were to just grab them without letting them wake up, but then again I think most people would be the same. The easiest way to wake them up is to say their name and then gently blow in their direction, also making a clicking sound with your tongue works. My girlfriend and I have 4 and our hamsters are so trained actually that when one of us opens the cage door they will wakeup and come see us. As for the photographer taking pictures, that is quite a challenge, you can look at the pictures on my myspace page and see how successful I have been taking pictures of ours, and for the most part ours are all laid back. Oh, the pics were taken at 4:30 in the afternoon Good Luck Smile
