| I'm workin' as a newspaper photographer now, I jus' booked my first wedding and am hoping to do personal photography for extra cash until I can make it a constant thing. How long should I expect it to take before I can make liveable earning from portraits, weddings, etc.? Anyone that's started their own photography business, how long did it take you before you could do it full-time? |

| While the skills you are learning with your camera and lenses will carry over into the wedding/portrait field, it is a totally different business. Most successful wedding and portrait photographers work for a few years as an assistant for a successful pro before branching out on their own.In your travels shooting spot news, sports and events, stop and talk to some of the pros in your area and pick their brains a little. When the time comes for you to switch careers, you will have a much better idea of what to expect. |
