I have no clue why they would suggest cupcakes.Alternative cakes could be cheesecake, pies, ice cream cakes...

Me too! I really dislike cake. I'm guessing its because other people like cake and its a less expensive way to appease these guests. Many bakeries will do bite-sized sweets; the an ice-cream bar and the other posters suggestions sound great too. Thanks for the ideas!

We rented a beautiful 'cake' which we pretended to cut for the photographs. We then had a beautiful dessert made with fresh strawberries. It was February in Canada so the strawberries were exotic. Everyone loved it and no one even thought to mention the fact that the cake was not real

The whole idea of a wedding day is to join together with the couple and celebrate their new marriage. If they decide to serve chocolate pudding cups, so be it, that is not a concern or decison for the guests to make. My niece served a variety of pies...it was a wonderful idea and people were okay with that. I make wedding cakes and even offered to make for her, but instead...I talked to a pie maker and arranged to pick up dozens of pies and travel two hours to deliver them for her. It isn't about cake and what others want, it is about what the bridal couple decides to serve. Take charge and enjoy your special day!

I asked a similar question once, and I had a lot of cupcake answers. And a couple of nasty answers because I didn't want cake at all.I like pies. Or why not crème brûlée?

Dessert buffet . . . a whole variety of desserts!!!http://community.theknot.com/cs/ks/user/page.aspx?username=BudgetBridesBioScroll about 3/4 of the way down this page, and check out the photo of a dessert buffet . . . a whole table of desserts.Love the idea. You could have tiramisu, or eclairs, or pie, or cheesecake, or chocolate chip cookies, or . . . well, you get the idea.

I once read a couple of ideas about monograming initials in to the crust of pies, or dusting designs in powdered sugar over fruity tarts. Another option if you like tarts is just to serve a tart to every guest, a small ones. Saves cutting fees. Some brides do cookies as a favor in addition to a cake. Why not just do a cookie buffet (instead of candy buffets) and give every guest a small favor box to take them home in?I dislike cupcakes, and I have absolutely NO idea why cupcakes and cakes are separated by some people. Just because it's popular doesn't mean that is why the answerer is looking for. It may be that a lot of people are reading 'alternative dessert' without reading the rest. I wouldn't put it past point-mongers.
