Just to follow up on this. The remote works wonderful and can be use from the side as well as slightly behind the camera. I have been using it for night photography/ timed exposures and am getting excellent results. Thanks for the info. Still, it seems a bit odd that they'd put the sensor on the front of the camera and advertise the remote "for taking pictures of subjects that are difficult to approach..."Sorry, make that batshit crazy.
