| I recall at my sister's church rehearsal before the wedding day, the priest made a comment that I later wondered about. He said he could marry them right there if they wanted all they needed were witnesses and they could avoid all the fuss. We all laughed but of course we wanted to take the extended family in consideration. I've been with my partner for almost 9 yrs and with two boys. And we both have very small families. On his side its just his mom and sister which they dont have a relationship with. I have my parents and 2 single brothers and 1 sister w/ family. We want to get married but it seems like we want something very small and intimate. We happened to live in away from our family. Money is an issue we are saving for a house and cant pay for them to come over. Can we just get married at a catholic church with witnesses present? Has anybody done this before? |

| Sure--all you need is someone to officiate & the required number of witnesses (2, I think). Your family probably won't like it, but it's not too far off from getting married by a judge. Double check with your priest to be sure; like the other person said, you'll still have to take the pre-Cana classes, or whatever they're calling them these days. |

| I don't know what the catholic 'laws' are but can you get married in the church after you have lived with somebody for 9 years. Is that God's teachings? |

| Hi. OF COURSE you can! I am Catholic myself, and I can tell you that any priest would jump at the chance to marry you with only a few witnesses present....or a very small guest list, if you choose to invite your families. I work at a church and I can tell you that ministers (of all faiths) really do not like to do weddings. It's just all the big hoopla involved that many ministers do not like to deal with.Yes, there is nothing wrong with having a Catholic wedding with only a few people present.Good luck! |

| Yes, of course.However, in your case, you are not practicing your Catholic faith -- so I'm wondering why you want to marry at a Catholic church... it seems odd. Maybe you had best go talk to a priest. |
