| Can someone tell me in detail what characteristics of photographic material allows a photography of the night sky that allows the stars to appear as arcs? |

| 1) put your camera on its back on the ground2) choose a low ISO3) expose over night ("T" or "B" with a lock-down cable release)4)Shoot in an area with little or now light pollutionAs I recall, using !SO 200 film you have to set the aperture to about f/16 |

| Star Trails are made using lenghtly time exposures - usually several minutes. It requires a camera with "B" mode, usually the aperture is set small to allow for the extended length of exposure.These are best shot well away from other light sources such as towns, roads and houses, ideally at high elevation (mountain top). Tripod or stable surface to place camera.Edit: J-Man, I never even thought about the moon being a problem but it makes perfect sense. Thanks for the tip. |

| Just to add to the two great answers here...Tripod, checkCable release, checkShutter speed bulb or T (time), checkAway from other sources of light pollution(this includes the moon, photographing the moon is a topic unto itself), checkIf your focused @ infinity, use a wide or wide open aperture, as Depth of Field is not a consideration. This will save you HOURS of exposure time.A typical star trail image will be an exposure of two hours or longer, in an image where the star trails trace across the entire frame, you'll need to go about six hours.A cool image can be made by identifying the North star, and centering it in your composition, as the star trails will produce concentric semi circles...Check Space.com for up coming astronomical events such as northern lights, and meteor showers, dates and time of the full moon and constellation locations in the night sky.Have Fun !!!Dawg...congrats on "Top Contributor" well deserved my friend !!! |
