"Inexpensive" and "NYC" rarely go together.

If they're that good of a caterer....they will charge that good. Nothing good comes cheap. Maybe try and have your friends to some cooking for you and pay them? Maybe try a deli in a grocery store to cater, they actually have some pretty good food. It will be hard to find fancy foods made up for you cheap unless you know someone.

I would also suggest approaching the local culinary schools (there are plenty in NYC) and your favorite restaurants to get a better deal. Unfortunately, in NYC nothing comes inexpensive so it may take some leg-work and negotiating but don't be deterred.

Check out Culinary Colleges or Culinary Schools, they may give a really good rate because they are students, and they need the practice.www.culinaryed.com
