| "The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right. The "best man" at this ceremony was a senator whose voting record, philosophy, and program were anathema to all the hard-won achievements of the past decade."It was both unfortunate and disastrous that the Republican Party nominated Barry Goldwater as its candidate for President of the United States. In foreign policy Mr. Goldwater advocated a narrow nationalism, a crippling isolationism, and a trigger-happy attitude that could plunge the whole world into the dark abyss of annihilation. On social and economic issues, Mr. Goldwater represented an unrealistic conservatism that was totally out of touch with the realities of the twentieth century. The issue of poverty compelled the attention of all citizens of our country. Senator Goldwater had neither the concern nor the comprehension necessary to grapple with this problem of poverty in the fashion that the historical moment dictated. On the urgent issue of civil rights, Senator Goldwater represented a philosophy that was morally indefensible and socially suicidal."- MLK Jr, The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jrhttp://www.stanford.edu/group/King/publications/autobiography/chp_23.htmJeff,This was the beginning of the switch. 1964, Southern Strategy. | His opinion. When you want your "guy" in the White House, you'll say whatever you can to make that happen. |

He said it to show his constituents where their interests lay. If he had not pointed out that the conservatives were trying to keep minorities in a powerless, subservient status, then the minority vote might have been unfocused (and therefore unimportant) for another few decades. The latest Republican propaganda tries to paint the Democratic Party as racist. It's one of the Big Lies which they so love to spread. Everyone in the USA (and in Tanzania) knows the bigots in America gravitate to the Republican party. It's a good thing to remind ourselves of this. Thank you.

Democrats like to say that the two parties have changed sides since this quote was made. Which is it? Does that change with whichever point you are currently trying to sell at any given time?

Interesting. When I first began to study politics, my favorite professor thalked about the "parameters of tollerability". Goldwater and Mc Govern were too far left and right.Upon the elections since Carter there have been no more parameters of tollerability.

It was a tumultuous time. Martin Luther King Jr. was amidst a social war that he was doing his best to keep as peaceful as possible. It was the the classic case of the lesser of two evils. Johnson chose appeasement rather than empowerment of the repressed. Meanwhile he pursued a corporate business venture in the guise of the war on Communism. The appeasement turned out to be nowhere near enough for MLK and his followers leading to assassinations of the threat to the Corporate Fascists.

The Republican Party was very respectable under President Eisenhower. But Barry Goldwater views were extreme, and he offended many people with those views.Fortunately he was never elected President.

Excellent speech-and it does apply today as well as it did over 30 years ago. Not much has changed in some ways, has it? Bush has done wonders to drag our country down. Unfortunately, many Americans are so easily led. If they had elected him once, maybe I could understand. But twice? I can only assume that not only are a number of voters incredibly naive, but quite a few are incredibly stupid.
