I have an S3 IS and the only problem I have with it is the white balancing. It tends to blow whites out and give the objects a red "glow." Be careful when you take photos with a lot of white in them. You may have to set it to manual mode. I sure the new one has the same problem. You just have to know how to adjust it. The powershot series are great cameras!Just like with other digital cameras, DO NOT USE THE DIGITAL ZOOM. It really makes the quality of the image go down.

I've gotta jump in and say I'm with ALT, the Cannon Powershot's are great little cameras, and the S5 IS, is about as close to a SLR as you can get, at a great price. My father came up for a visit and he has one, and I spent some time with it. Needless to say he almost left without it, because I didn't want to give it back. Great images, great features, great camera !!!

I too have the S3is, and would really like to have the S5.You won't be disappointed! Canon's technology is far superior to everybody else out there. Their lenses are excellent. For my money, the S5is is the best super P&S on the market.

As they all said, it's a good camera, but it is what it is. It's not a full format digital SLR with a 900 mm lens. Be realistic about it. Go to dpreview.com and stevesreviews.com and Flickr.com's camera finder and look at some sample images. Blow them up full size and see what you think. For reasonable prints like 6x4 or 5x7, it will be great. For 8x10 it will be okay. Don't try to crop a small portion of your image and expect miracles, though.

My first digi was a Canon Pro 90is which is the Grandpa to the S5is, it was a bit slow but takes great pictures and convinced me to eventually make the switch from my 35mm SLR to a D-SLR.The S5is is a much improved version of the Pro90 and I'm sure you'll enjoy it and it has partial and full manual controls that will allow you to grow and learn. The flip out screen comes in really handy for candid shots. One more note: The Pro 90 was only 2.6 mp and prints could be enlarged to 8x10 but no larger. It should be possible to go to 11x14 comfortably with the S5is.
