Olympus E series. I would say the E-510. Don't forget to get the bounce flash bracket for the flash.

You need to get a digital SLR camera like the Olympus E300 or Olympus E500 (which is what I have.) It comes with a 14 mm lens and a 40 mm lens. If you dont know what that means, 14 mm is for just regular photos from an average distance ( up to 45 mm away.) And 40mm lens to 150mm that comes with it can take far away pictures with clear quality. The resolution is good, you can change the file type, RAW, HQ, etc. You can either get the ridiculously priced one that is 1000+, but I got the cheaper kind for around 600 dollars.

I don't think there really is a "best" camera for anything. People should realize that the lens makes a lot of difference and is just as important a consideration as the camera body.I also agree with the recommendations above. The Olympus E Series cameras are quite good. You may want to get the larger cameras like the E510 or E500, and stay away from the E410. This is because when you attach heavier lens to the camera body it will be unbalanced if you choose a smaller lighter body. You should also look into the Nikon D80 or the Canon 30D. They are also very nice cameras, and they look professional, which means your clients will trust you to take their pictures. When choosing a lens, don't skimp on the quality. For instance, if you are going with Olympus I recommend the 14-54mm F2.8-3.5 lens which retails for about $400. This lens is one of the best quality to price lens available. You need to get lens which have a large maximum aperture because you will mostly be shooting indoors. Also a large aperture will give you good blurring of background for portraits. You should also buy at least one prime lens. A prime lens gets you sharper images and normally have a large maximum aperture like F2.8. Consider getting the 50mm F2.0 lens which is great as your main portrait lens. There are also "accessories" (more like fundamental gear) that you need to consider like a tripod, flash units, spare batteries (at least two extra for backup purposes), another camera body (again for backup if the first one fails), portable lighting units, a laptop (for mobile work), etc.. It's going to be costly all the equipment you need to purchase but that's the startup recommendations you need to look at.

If you need to ask, then you are not yet experienced enough to start a wedding photography business. That's not a job for beginner photographers. Sorry - but that's the truth. You would be better to get on the phone and call the wedding photographers in your city. Ask them if they would be interested in hiring and training you as a photographer's assistant. After a few years of that, you will have enough knowledge to start your own business.-- Disclosure: I am the owner of www.lenslenders.com lens rentals in Canada.

I tend to agree. If you're unsure of what camera to buy, then maybe you're not ready yet to photograph the most important day in a bride's life.
Talking cameras, though....a camera is a tool; pure and simple. You buy a tool because of your task requirements. Some go Olympus, Canon or Nikon, while some go Pentax or Sony. Whatever you choose, you have to take in some fundamentals like - sensor (CCD or CMOS), RAW or JPEG, Interpolation, and image quality. When you understand these, then maybe you are ready to buy a camera. Also, what about the theory of photography? How would you cope with a bride against a dark background in terms of exposure? Would you know when to Auto or manual white-balance? How would you balance the light when you want to photograph a bride contrejour against a window? What about your digital workflow for image import? How would you backup your imagery?
Unfortunately, because you can get a reasonably priced digital camera these days, everyone's becoming a photographer. Being a photographer is about learning, training, having the potential and then having the willpower to succeed. The difference between a professional is years of training and building on their skills. Unfortunately, because there are now so many people "playing" at being a photographer, this is taking a serious chunk out of the established professionals who earn a (diminishing) living from their business.
If you want to be a photographer - get trained! |
