I just recently got engaged on Christmas and my fiancee and I are paying for the wedding ourselves and we have set a wedding date in August 2010. That gives us the two years we need to still take care of our children and house hold bills while paying our own wedding expenses. My question is should we hold our engagement party this summer or wait until next summer (2009) so that the wedding will be the following year. Any suggestions?

Technically, the engagement party shouldn't be more than 6 or 8 weeks after you get engaged, but you are kind of an exception to the rule, it seems! Long engagements make that tricky. So, I'm gonna say, I have no idea! Smile Generally you'd have it sooner rather than later, though.

either I think is fine.....I think it would be good to have one late summer this year...everyone should should get into the mood and share your happy feelings.also, since you are paying for your own wedding, then the cost of you party should be a factor....don't go crazy, but make it a time to remember for allgood luck

I have never heard of engagment parties. When did this "tradition" start? Before we got married in July 1995, we didn't have one nor did we ever hear of any such thing.

The engagement party should not be hosted by you, but by a family member (typically the bride's parents). While etiquette seems to dictate doing it soon after the engagement is announced, I think you have some time given your wedding date is so far out. Etiquette-wise most weddings are with 1 and 1/2 years of becoming engaged so I think having a longer engagement gives you some flexibility.I am having a nearly 2-year engagement (engaged Christmas 2007, wedding date 10/31/09) so my mother is planning my engagement party for late summer 2008

Well coming from experience I would say to have your engagement party this summer. I have been engaged for over a year and a half and would have loved an engagement party but waited way to long. I think that you need to celebrate your engagement this summer. If you wait till the next summer than everyone will already know you are engaged. In my opinion the sooner the better or else people think you are just trying to get things from them even though that's not the case. I hope this helps and makes sense. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get everyone together. Good Luck!

Most people hold the engagement party soon after they get engaged, but most people don't have two year engagements. If you hold the engagement party now, then many people will be saying to you "aren't you married yet?" or they will assume you are already married. I would wait until early 2010 to hold your engagement party. Then you will be more in sinc with the timing of the wedding. Of course, unless you are wanting your gifts now, but I doubt you would be like that.

My husband and I had a 2 year engagement. We got engaged in 2005. We had our engagement party the summer of 2006, and got married fall of 2007. This way everything was evenly spread out and it didn't hurt our pockets all at once.

I dont think it matters but usually the engagement party is a few weeks after you get engaged, but you can do it whenever you want!! Usually a family member on either the brides.. or the grooms side holds a engagement party for the engaged couple.
