I am having a 50's wedding, not a sock hop theme, just a 50's classic attire theme. My grandmother is making my dress. It is a tea legenth dress and has a circle skirt. The top is boat neck with 3/4 sleeves. What fabric would look nice? I don't like satin or silk. Thanks!!!Thank you for all these great answers!!!

Taffeta. It's crisp and has been used for wedding dresses for years...

Taffeta is best for that type of dress. It will also hold a very nice shape for you. Sounds like a great wedding!!!

if you don't like the shiny silk, then you can go with chiffon or a raw silk. Both are silk but have a different texture than the shiny silk that satin imitates.chiffon was used a lot in the 50's for wedding and evening gowns and cocktail dresses.and I agree with the previous poster's suggestion for Taffeta.

In the 50's chantilly lace was really popular. Along with silk faille, silk crepe, tulle, chiffon and taffeta. Some were made of satin but satin was more popular in the 30's and 40's.I know you said you don't like silk, but many gowns that are made of silk are not the typical shiny silk. Silk faille is a heavier fabric that is really luxurious but not shiny like traditional silk. Many designer gowns are made from silk, you should check the fabric store before you make a decision. Here is a pic of a classic 50's style gown with taffeta and tulle with the cumberbund style, it is absolutly adorable, there are some other 50's gowns here too:http://www.wackycats.com/womens%203.htmHere are some vintage gown sites to give you more of an idea of hte materials and styles used in the 50's:http://www.sydneysvintageclothing.com/cart/catalog/Wedding_Dress-211-1.htmlhttp://www.tias.com/7725/InventoryPage/1431396/1.htmlThis one is ivory chiffon with a full waist and is also a classic 50's style:http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-50's-Ivory-CHIFFON-Prom-party-WEDDING-dress_W0QQitemZ170186514943QQcmdZViewItem?IMSfp=TL0801211056a8175http://www.woodlandfarmsantiques.com/WFAbeta2/UploadPagesOCT_07/BridalOCT_07/Gowns/index.htmlGood luck!
