I'm getting married February of 2008. We're having a backyard wedding (huge park-like) and I was thinking about having seats only for immediate family members and the others can stand up for the 15-20 minute ceremony. There will be a few tables and chairs for the reception, but it will be far away, so the guests will have to stand. Everyone's telling me they can't wait until the wedding. I want to request that the guests wear their outdoor clothes since we're having a BBQ and Space Jumper for kids right after to avoid a hassle of going home to change. But my immediate family will dress up for (photography) sake. Me, my fiance' and family will change after we do: picture taking, cake cutting, toast and dance. Everyone will know everyone at the reception, it's extended family, neighbors and friends so they can mingle and eat while we change. Is this acceptable, rude or tacky?

Why would you say it is tacky? After all it is your extended family and if everyone is comfortable with the proposed situation then why worry about it? It is not rude as long as people know up front and accept it. As long as people do not object then forget about offending anyone. It doesn't matter what other people think now does it? It shouldn't. Do what you want and feel comfortable with and don't worry what other people think.

No no no - it is not just 15 or 20 minuets - the guest have to get there and stand around waiting for the ceremony to Begin - it is always late and the guest are just standing around waiting and when it does begin they have to stand there quietly and listen. They are already tired of standing before you even come down the garden path. If you do not want to supply the chairs then let them bring their own. Since you are having an outside reception with food and drink this would also help solve the problem of seating at the reception to. I would much rather bring my own chairs and enjoy the wedding than get tired and board standing and waiting. You can solve two problems at one time - believe me they want mind at all and will probably be much more relaxed sitting and visiting with friends and family.Have a great wedding - CONGRATULATIONS

Love, love, love the idea for your casual wedding. That just sounds like a huge party! Way fun!!! I went to a backyard bbq type wedding a few years ago, and the bride and groom put on the invitations that guests were to wear BBQ-attire. They also had a wedding web site (free at weddingchannel.com) where they outlined the style of the wedding and the specifics of how they wanted people to dress. It was a great tool and I highly recommend it.As far as the ceremony seating goes, I think you may want to consider some form of seating....maybe benches. I went to a wedding once without seating and it felt awkward. And having the family only sit may make the guests feel like not important. It's just a thought from an outside perspective!Happy wedding-- you have a fabulous idea and it is going to be great!

Asking the guests to dress for BBQ attire is perfectly acceptable, and sounds like a wonderful time! It's understandable to want the family dressed up for the photos, and you all will change later to add to the comfort of the guests.I agree with the others on seating though. It will be much longer than the 15-20 minute ceremony. From your information, it also sounds like you are going to have a great deal of kids at your wedding. Children will not be able to stand still or silent for that long, so it's best to have benches or blankets on the ground for people to enjoy the ceremony.

Great idea. It is not rude or tacky...it is YOUR wedding. I concure with all of the others though....some form of seating would be helpful.Best of Luck.

Where and How to Start?
There’s so much to do, it can be mind-numbing. Don’t worry. I planned and held my first wedding in two months and my second wedding in three months. If you have the luxury of a year or more, feel lucky!
Wedding Invitation
Ideally, invitations should be mailed out 6-8 weeks before the big day to give guests time to make arrangements to attend and RSVP back to you.
Wedding Attire
Where I come from, buying a tuxedo is virtually unheard of. Renting is probably the way to go to realize the ultimate savings on the groom’s attire.
Wedding Flowers
Cheap doesn't mean that your wedding flowers can't be beautiful. All flowers are lovely no matter what they cost.
Wedding Ceremony Decoration
Most wedding ceremonies are short and sweet, so why spend a majority...
Wedding Music
Music for your wedding ceremony could consist of live or recorded performances.
Wedding Photography
Pictures are priceless, and you want to be sure you have plenty of good pictures of your special day.
Wedding Favors
Some brides don’t like the idea of giving gifts to her guests, but we think it’s a nice gesture as a thank you...
Wedding Food
Wedding food can take a huge chunk out of your wedding budget.
Wedding Cake
Your wedding cake is the centerpiece of the reception. It is a scrumptious dessert as well as part of a tradition
Wedding Party
The question of whether or not to serve alcohol at your wedding is one that can cause dissension in the ranks of family.
