We are getting married at a restaurant (out on their terrace) and then having our reception in one of their banquet rooms. The restaurant's dress code is business attire after 6 pm. Our ceremony will start at 4 pm, reception at 6 pm. This is all fine with me - I wanted somewhat formal/traditional attire for our guests, but I don't know how to tell people they need to wear business attire. Do you put that info in the invitation? On the RSVP card? Should we call everyone and tell them personally?

I'd put it in the invitation. "Dress is business attire"

Put guidance on a separate card and send it with your wedding invitation.

put it on the bottom of invite...when they look back to check place etc...they will see it...RSVP cards come back to you...or place a seperate card in with invite and make sure they know there is a strict dress code....

Put it on the invitationPeople save the invitation to remind them of the date, location etc. So that is where you want to place business attire please.

I have never heard of an invitation saying anything other than "Black Tie" or "White Tie" when it comes to wedding attire. Why should you say "Business Attire" -- it's not a job interview! I would think that getting a printed wedding invitation, and the tone of the wording, implies that your guests should dress appropriately. If anything, I would personally tell people that you might not think would show up wearing suits, dresses, etc. I definitely would NOT put it on the invitation and would think it quite odd (if not slightly offensive) if someone felt they had to tell me how to dress for an occasion as special as a wedding. Do we have to tell people how to dress for funerals, baby showers, football parties, graduations, etc??? I think we should all know enough to dress up for a wedding!
