| I got this camera for my birthday last year and when using the flash and in daylight the camera is mostly fine but when taking pics at night in low-light without the flash - like live band photography, or Christmas lights, for example - all I get is massive amounts of blur. I've tried nearly all of the scene modes and I can't find one that works. Is there a way to speed up the shutter speed so the images don't come out looking like crap? I got some really good shots - they are dark as you would expect but you can clearly tell what it is etc. But since then I've had no success... is a good idea to take the shot with the flash on and cover the flash up? I've had success with other cameras with this 'technique' before. |

| Putting your camera on a tripod or monopod will get rid of camera shake, and this will stop a lot of the blur.If that's not possible, try Sports mode.If no luck, use Shutter Priority or Manual mode and set a shutter speed of 1/125 or faster.You may have to turn your ISO up full to get 1/125.Zoom OUT to give your camera its widest aperture.If you can't get a proper exposure doing this, there just ain't enough light.You'll need a faster lens and more ISO horsepower to do what you want.HTH. |

| In low light you don't generally want to be "speeding up the shutter speed". You actually want the opposite. You want a slower shutter speed because it allows more light in (as does a larger aperture).However, using a slower shutter speed presents a few problems. You either need to mount the camera on a tripod and you also need to make sure your subjects are not moving, otherwise you will have nothing but blur. So, this obviously wouldn't be practical for many situations.You CAN increase your ISO. Doing this will allow a faster shutter speed, which means less chance there is of blur. Your camera allows you this adjusment (but it doesn't allow you much more, other that 24 scene modes to choose from). You can only change the ISO in the Program mode. For low light (without flash) ideally you need to use a higher ISO such as, 800, 1600 and higher...but the drawback with this is (especially in compact cameras) the higher your ISO is, the more noise (those horrible speckles) you will have in your image.Your options are quite limited with this camera. At the very least, make sure you have your image stabilizer turned on and try to up the ISO. The camera will select the best shutter speed depending on the amount of available light. If that doesn't work, using the flash might be your safest option.Or buy a better camera! Only a dSLR camera (with a fast lens) will allow successful high ISO images.good luck... |
