Since my betrothed and I will be getting married on Halloween, I want to have a bit of fun, without going overboard. Our reception is going to be held at a haunted hotel beside the beach, and we intend to invite approximately 100 people. The clothes I am most drawn to for us are period ensembles from the middle ages. It occurred to me that having a masquerade could be just the right concept for us. I want to include the guests in the fun, and still make the attire optional. I intend to offer satin black and white domino masks as favors so that if someone forgets his or her mask, or changes his or her mind about participating they have a back up. I also want to allow people to bring their own masquerade masks since I can't afford to give them all fantastic elaborate creations. However, I do not want to have a costume party... no zombies or serial killers etc. I am going for elegance and fun.How can I word the invitation to get the results I am looking for? Or is it all dumb?

Say somewhere on the reception card "Elegant costumes admired but not required". In your save the date packet, send out a list of costume ideas. Many people tend to draw a blank when it comes to ideas so listing several will help them out as well as letting them know what you're looking for. You can be specific as to what you don't want.

Just tell them on the invite that Costumes are welcome but they don't have to wear them if they don't want to. Maybe give them a theme of some kind so they don't come dress as something horrible.

Cordially invite them to attend your first annual Black Tie Masquerade Ball, of course!

I think this could be a really FUN idea...if you haven't done your invites yet, you could have them done up as if it's an invite to a masquerade ball type of deal...then perhaps find some way to word your request for the attire and add that info on a small insert w/the invite. For example, we had our reception outside and wanted to make sure our guests were dressed comfortably/appropriately so I inserted cute little note cards printed up to say:To ensure that all of our guests are able to fully enjoy the evening and all of its festivities, we wanted to inform you that both the ceremony and reception will be held outdoors and on natural ground. Please dress for weather and comfort. So many of our guests commented to both of our parents how much they appreciated the heads up. I realized the situation is a bit different for you, but I guess my point is that if you add it on a little insert, it looks a little better (etiquette wise) than including it in the wording on the actual invite. You can also rely on 'word of mouth' as well!Congrats and have FUN!!!

Wow, Answerers, there are so many good ideas! Don't forget places like Party City stores (partycity.com) and others sell masquerade type items, ie for mardi gras year round. Masks also come in solids for less than $1 and can be craftily decorated in many ways. (these are the around the eye type, not full face, but you can attach them to prepared dowels or sturdy plastic thin tubing for holding).

I love it! If it's right for you and your fiance then you need to go for it! I think people will take cues from the whole look and feel of your invitations and then just spread the word (use gossip to your advantage) about what you hope people will wear! Calling the reception a 'Masquerade Ball' will help people understand that you want it to stay classy, too. Are there going to be kids? If so, you could have a craft table set up with all the stuff you need to make masks, heck the adults might want to join in the fun too! AND you can control the types of materials they use on their masks.OK now the invitations, Pick a font and a color scheme that represents a classy/masquerade ball to you. I love the B/W and maybe with a splash of another color, like the color of your flowers. Print on a shiny or opalescent card stock. Then say something like Please join us after the ceremony for a Masquerade Ball. Feel free to join us decked out in your most festive masquerade attire! I think once the whole look of the invite comes together, you won't get zombies or other scary creatures. If there are specific friends or relatives that you're worried about--next time you see them just exclaim how excited you are about your reception idea and casually ask them what they think they might wear and that will give you a chance to offer helpful suggestions.....Anyway, good luck, I hope that helped!!

I LOVE this suggestion:Say somewhere on the reception card "Elegant costumes admired but not required."^^The wording flows beautifully and is fancy-sounded enough for wedding invites. Also, I would suggest getting invititations that reflect the theme somehow. That might help get the point across. Or, I just found this suggestion on another website:Masquerade Ball & Dinner7.30pm for 8July 30thSteenside Town HallBlack tie, optional costumeIt sounds so fun, by the way! Smile

I think the idea would be best played out for a one year anniversary or some other party--not a wedding. Here's why. If your guests have to spend $100 or so on a period costume, then that will have a huge impact on the gifts you receive. Also, since it's on halloween, you'll give the impression that you're turning this serious event into a halloween party by asking people to dress up.
