Guy meets girl on Shaadi.com and chats for a few months. Girl is US resident, guy is in Gujarat, India. She goes to India to meet him and ends up being pressured into marriage. She goes to India on August 24th and wedding takes place on Sept 1st. Then she returns to US on Sept 9th. Registration papers signed at home of groom along with Hindu ceremony. After wedding and also after returning to US, it turns out that the guy is drinking heavily and has many anger issues. She finds herself sending him money to support him and his family as he stops working and continues drinking. Girl had started his visa processing to have him come to US, but stops processing when she realises his habits and feels that she is too scared of this relationship. What is the best course of action to null, void or divorce. She would prefer to not go back to India for divorce as she is scared of what he will do to her. Please advise.

Girl is not so smart. Girl needs to contact a lawyer for legal advice. Girl needs to learn about different cultures before getting involved with men in other countries.

Definetely need to contact an attorney. Girl does not need to go to India for divorce to happen. I dated someone and he was married before. His was moved back to Europe during the marriage and she filed for divorce from over there even though they were married in the United States. All I can say is Girl needs to be more careful but I am not going to lecture at all.

You can file for divorce here in the states but if he contests it you will have to find a lawyer. Good Luck.

if i understand correctly, the wedding took place in india...so why would you need to file for divorce here. there is no record. cant u just forget about the whole mess and move on? if you are not married here, doesnt that mean you can still marry someone else here with no problem? not sure how it works. just a thought

This is whats messed up with the Indian culture!! I'm Indian myself and am ALWAYS embarrassed when I read or hear about my fellow Indians getting pressured into marriage. What do you think was going to happen? The problem with us is that we get influenced too much by other people, without THINKING FOR OURSELVES!! Tell her NOT to go back to India for the divorce because if she reluctantly married him, then when she goes back to India she will be influenced into seeing him again one last time before the divorce. He may just control her again and make her to stop getting the divorce. She should divorce from America and find someone HERE that isnt such an a**. Dating people is hard enough because there are so many jerks out there, but marrying someone you met online after a short period of time.........R u kidding me? This is the reason why Americans dont respect us too much.
