| Look, I'm a white Christian Conservative Republican who majored in English. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the English language, for reasons I won't get into here. And I LOVE my country. But I also recognize that times change. Just as language evolves over time, so does culture and government. The Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence in English because that was the language they all happened to speak. But they recognized that this would be a nation of immigrants and that those who didn't happen to speak English shouldn't be penalized for that. That's why they didn't make English the official language of the United States. I happen to think they were right.The real sentiment behind this letter has more to do with illegal immigration than with language. I have two things to say about this: One, I agree that illegal immigration is a problem, but the way to tackle that problem is not through legislating a language into officiousness. We need border control. Two, you can bet if I were going to write a letter to Congress about my passionate support for an Official Language, I would make damn sure that letter didn't violate all known rules of that language. |

| I wrote a letter to my two Senators (Levin and Stabenow - MI) about this when I learned of their votes in June. Ms. Stabenow's autoresponse came back to me stating she voted against making English the official language because it would do nothing to generate jobs in MI. What kind of an answer is that? Levin, of course, did not respond. When I wrote back and responded to her answer, I received an email that stated they could not find my address in their database and would only respond to constituents. It will only get worse if Obama or Clinton get into office. It makes me sick because they are only looking for a vote to win. I for one will not be voting for them! |
