| We are tying the knot in August. We wanted to do something cute and original for our guest, so we are buying pickling jars and making out own pickled vegetables as given them as favors. What veggies would be best? How big should the jars be?For how long should we pickle them for? What do you guys think????I have pickled before!!I was just wondering what other ideas I can get .... I have pickled cauliflower, carrots, cucumbers, jalapenos and garlic .... I usually leave them for two months before I eat them. The problem is my wedding is not until August and if I made the jars now, would they last until then???Also, my colors are black and white! |

| Awesome idea. Very unique. I would use a pint size or smaller - canning is difficult.I would try different kinds of veggies to pickle. Then your guests can trade or bring home a variety of things to try. |

| Interesting, what are your colors, might use that as a jumping off point, especially if the favors will be sitting on the tables or actually the centerpieces. |

| That's cute! . . .But jarring is tricky if you don't know! I'm not sure about the time, but I would do sort of small jars (think of like, the small size jar you can get of jelly in the supermarket) and then put a ribbon around it or something. Plus you can have labels made with your names and the date, and then what's inside. . .I'd just do something mixed so it looks really cute. . . .Such a great idea! Enjoy your day!!! |

| Pickle cucumbers and make....well pickles. You should let them sit for at least a month or two to get decent flavor.I've done alot of canning since my Grandpa has a farm and there really aren't alot of veggies that taste good pickled. Instead of pickling I would suggest you do something else like making a jam or fruit preserve that more people would enjoy. |

Aww! I wanna go to your wedding! My grandma used to pickle what seems like everything haha. I miss it. Off course there's cucumbers, as someone said. My fave was always cauliflower. She'd add hot peppers and make it hot. Even though I was just a kid I'd eat that up like crazy...Then drink like a liter of soda She also pickled hot peppers by themselves. Artichoke, Aspargus, Cabbage, Olives, Carrots. My aunt pickles Garlic...and that is awesome. As for the jars: http://www.sks-bottle.com/CanningJars.html I'd go for the smallest ones you could find, It would cheaper. Like the smallest ones in this photo:http://www.sks-bottle.com/Canning_02.jpgYou could tie a ribbon matching your wedding colors or even get custom labels made to put on them. That would rock!As for how long you pickle them, I really have no clue, I never learned how to do it but you got me wanting to. I bet if you asked in the Food/Recipe section on yahoo answers you'd get tons of replies. I'm sorry I couldn't help you out with that part of the question though. But yeah, I'd definitely go with cauliflower, cucumbers, olives or garlic. They taste awesome! |

| Your idea is nice but are you proficient at pickling. Its more detailed and troublesome than it appears. Not everyone can do it and some results can be disastrous. Let me suggest another option. How about jelly or jam. Its not hard and fruits are in season during the summer and you could start in the next few weeks with strawberries. Blueberries will come off in June and blackberries in early July. In the absence of everything else, the ingredients for orange marmalade is always available and you could also do a batch of mint jelly. Jelly jars come in 4, 8 and 12 oz and I would use 4 oz for favors. For recipes just buy a bottle of Certo or a box of Sure-Jell and follow the recipes in the box. |

| If you don't know how to can things, I think you should think of a different favor. I'm sure most of your guests wouldn't like to have to lug a glass jar around with them all evening. Please choose a different kind of favor. One that won't break and something that is not canned.Happy wedding! |

| I think that's a great idea, but maybe not since you haven't pickled before.Jam or jelly is a much better option - and you can get cute little 1/2 pt. jars which are lovely. However, if you do go the vegetable route - either stick with garlic dill pickles, or sweet pickles like yum-yums.
