A friend of mine asked me to do some photography for his band, and it's looking like the only time slot that will work for everybody is going to be late afternoon. They definitely want an outdoor shoot, and our location is nice - a rocky section of the James River. Is there anyone out there who's really got sunset photography down to an art? What tips can you give me?

I would suggest you bring your flash, and try to research the web on article regarding fill in flash. The idea is to expose the background properly (thus showing the sunset as backdrop instead of a washed out pale background) and use the flash to ensure the people in the forground have proper exposure. Some camera did a good job without much manual intervention.

There is two was to shoot this assignment;BACK1 Put the subject facing away from the sun, it will create a rim light (siloute) . 2 Use frontal flash with diffusion 2 to 1 1/2 stops under the exposure of the sky, so it looks more natural.3 Use Warm gels in the flash so you match the color of the light. FRONT Watch out with your shadow. By using a long lens. But most important than everything ele "Plan your shoot".Find out at what time the sun sets.Arrive on time and get everybody ready.Remember that you just have very few minutes to shoot as much as you can.Good Luck
