I am getting quite good with the camera, but i want to learn about filters and Photoshop. All the local camera clubs seem to talk about competitons , which seems a bit geekish to me. I went along to one recently and spent the whole night watching slides of some blokes visit to Paris, talk about watchin paint dry. When I posed the question of , `Here are some of my photos, how can I mke them better`? The answer I got of , oh......... perhaps you should buy a magazine on photography was hardly the answer I was wanting. Surely you learn by doing, i.e. using the tips more experienced photographer have learned. Are camera clubs like this? Are there any clubs in the Glasgow area that are hands on and not here are Jims holiday pics people? Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Rather than sitting in a camera club watching others idea of what makes a good photo, take a look at the Black Book and see what is selling to magazines and advertisers.I use it all the time for photo ideas and enhancing my photo techniques.

Hi, I run a digital camera group I don't think we are stuffy Can't say to much about what happens in Glasgow, only that it is a photographers dream(we all agree). However firstly I would suggest that although Photoshop elements is top class you should try Paintshop pro, equally as good as if not better depending on which Magazine you read. I prefer it it is simpler to use and cheaper, to try it you could buy an earlier edition say p/pro 8 from off e-bay for a few pounds, instead of paying out £80, You could have a real try and then if you wanted to go more professional then shell out. As far as learning have a look on the Internet re digital cameras, there is plenty of info there. If you still into photoshop elements have a look at www.dc.com, some good info. Sorry I can go on forever. Have a go yourself and whilst your doing that you can keep your eye open for a better camera club. Best of Luck

The way that I learned photoshop was from experimenting, books, and the web. I started off with the "photoshop WOW book" to learn some of the basics--it was OK, but I'm sure there are better books out there for the beginner. Scott Kelby has some out there geared towards the photographer that get good reviews. Once you get a little more advanced, pick up Katrin Eismann's books (photoshop restoration and retouching)--it's an excellent resource. For general retouching tips and feedback, I got a lot out of the retouching forum on dpreview.com. There's a lot of helpful folks out there--if you post a picture and say "what can I do with this?", you'll get a ton of responses and examples.Good luck!

unfortunately i can't help you with camera clubs in glasgow, but i can point you in the direction of some excellent books, which may help you... for photoshop, martin evening has written the bible... its by far the most thorough and easiest to understand publication i've ever looked at... and to be honest, if its not covered in his book, photoshop can't do it... i think its about £22 from amazon and easily worth double the price... for composition, i'd recommend :michael milton - 100 ways to take better black and white photographs... its not expensive, but the 100 exercises in the book are designed to make you think about the picture you're taking... bert krages - the art of composition... is also very good, and really helps you train your eye to look for the best shot... lastly, john garrett - mastering black & white photography... is great to read, he's a professional photographer and has written the process he goes through, from composition through to photoshop and final hard copy production, for a range of different subjects... well worth it...the books are black & white focused but they shouldn't cost more than £10 each from amazon... i just couldn't find much stuff in colour, and what there was, didn't really seem like it would help me to improve... good luck..
