If you're really concerned about hurting his feelings, maybe you could tell him that you'll put $800 (or however much you were going to pay a DJ) towards his equipment and he has to come up with the rest. That way you won't be paying any extra, you'll be helping out your cousin, and he'll be able to be the DJ. But he has to be sure that he'll be able to come up with the money for the other part of the equipment.

Why don't you talk to your DJ, and see if your cousin could help at the wedding, like a "Mentor/Protege"? That way your cousin could get to use some really REALLY good equipment, and learn from a professional? He might just get a job out of the deal!As for being wrong or right... I think you did the right thing.

You were smart to go with the professional. It was wrong for your cousin to expect you to buy the equipment for him. He's still young, so he will have to learn that if he wants to DJ he will have to get his own equipment.

I don't think you were wrong at all. Already you have so many expenses with the wedding to add buying DJ equipment to the list seems unfair to you. Especially when you can get a decent DJ for a reasonable price. Maybe you could ask the DJ if your cousin could help him out to get better experience for his future. That may help any hard feelings that are lingering out there and may lead to your cousin getting a DJ job in the future! Good luck!

sorry, i would not trust a 16 year old with any important part of my wedding. period. make sure this other dj knows exactly what kind of music you want and make sure you go to one of his jobs so you can see and hear for yourselves what he does, do not assume you know without seeing for yourself that he is that good, or you may wind up unpleasantly surprised. dont assume find out for yourself and have the wonderful entertainment you deserve.

No, you weren't wrong. Your cousin was being unrealistic, which is to be expected, because he's 16. He will learn that sometimes things don't work out the way we want them too- and this is a good lesson to learn. Don't give it another thought.

You made a good choice by hiring a professional.Tell your cousin, that it is more importnant to you that he attend your wedding as a guest and not as an employee, because you value his company more and you wnat him to share in your special day.

No, not at all...just tell your cousin you'd rather have him as a guest not as an 'employee'.......so why doesn't his mother or father buy him the expensive DJ equipment?...sounds like the kid is looking to get someone to 'set him up' on their coin.....since he's a minor he can't enter into a contract to pay you back....so unless you plan on gifting him with it.......unless you can rent the equipment but if anything goes wrong you may be on the hook for repairs so all in all I say you did the best thing..your coz will get over it, I'm sure.......and if Lady thinks you're being cheap, SHE can buy the equipment lol betcha she's the type to look for sh!t on other people's paycheck......
