you will need experience and a good reputation, also a portfolio of examples of work. Why not get a job or volunteer for part time work at a local photographers to get this experience. Also you could take pictures of friends weddings (not the main photographer) and get experience this way. Then you could think about setting up your own business later

You need to learn to take sharply focused, well lit photographs. You will need a pro level camera and lighting equipment. Take some photography courses or workshops.Try to find an established wedding photographer who needs an assistant. Tell him/her what you want to do and offer to work for little money in exchange for training.Good luck.

First join the PPA http://www.ppa.comThere you you will find a lot of support and knowledge which are very important in your field. They also have contests which hone your photography skills. Moreover they have a group insurance which you will need in order to run a business. You will be able to get a much better rate than getting it on your own. Good luck

Yeah free work is the best way to go for sure. Wedding photographers are really well trained, especially with people skills. To be honest that's my version of Hell, wedding photography. I wouldn't do it for a million bucks. You have so much pressure on your shoulders. Weddings are pretty crazy anyway, but that amount of pressure isn't for me.Start slow, even do portraits of friends if you can. Because remember if anything goes wrong your career is so over.

Atom 74 speaks with GREAT wisdom... "To be honest that's my version of Hell, wedding photography. I wouldn't do it for a million bucks. You have so much pressure on your shoulders. Weddings are pretty crazy anyway, but that amount of pressure isn't for me".I have built a smalll business on wedding photography, but after about 3 years of it, I feel as above. I do very high quality work, people love it... but I just cannot deal with the pressure any longer. Plus I think if I have to photo one more couple stuffing cake in each other's mouths I will scream. Art it is not, ... or least not much of it. I will be ending the wedding thing after this year and doing what I love with photography... portraits and fine art.steve

Where and How to Start?
There’s so much to do, it can be mind-numbing. Don’t worry. I planned and held my first wedding in two months and my second wedding in three months. If you have the luxury of a year or more, feel lucky!
Wedding Invitation
Ideally, invitations should be mailed out 6-8 weeks before the big day to give guests time to make arrangements to attend and RSVP back to you.
Wedding Attire
Where I come from, buying a tuxedo is virtually unheard of. Renting is probably the way to go to realize the ultimate savings on the groom’s attire.
Wedding Flowers
Cheap doesn't mean that your wedding flowers can't be beautiful. All flowers are lovely no matter what they cost.
Wedding Ceremony Decoration
Most wedding ceremonies are short and sweet, so why spend a majority...
Wedding Music
Music for your wedding ceremony could consist of live or recorded performances.
Wedding Photography
Pictures are priceless, and you want to be sure you have plenty of good pictures of your special day.
Wedding Favors
Some brides don’t like the idea of giving gifts to her guests, but we think it’s a nice gesture as a thank you...
Wedding Food
Wedding food can take a huge chunk out of your wedding budget.
Wedding Cake
Your wedding cake is the centerpiece of the reception. It is a scrumptious dessert as well as part of a tradition
Wedding Party
The question of whether or not to serve alcohol at your wedding is one that can cause dissension in the ranks of family.
