| I am a student and currently have a Canon SD800. I am thinking about upgrading. I am open to suggestions. Some things to take in for consideration.-I will be using it for taking photos of my family (including a 7 year old brother).-Also for taking photos for my drawing and 2d class.-I would like more manual controls and features.-Good low light capabilities. -Needs to work well for both indoor and outdoor concerts.-Options for filters and etc.-Good photo quality.-Can take good fast action pictures.-At least a 2.5 inch screen.-Around $400 to $700.-I am interested in professional photography.I have been looking into the Canon G9, but not any dslrs. Since I would like to use the camera for concerts, a dslr would be harder to get into a venue. I have little knowledge about dslr camera brands and models. Any information or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

| To meet all your needs except sneaking it into concerts a DSLR is required. Most everybody who answers will tell you Canon or Nikon and both are good cameras. However, I recognize that there are several other viable players in the DSLR game.The Sony A200 with 18-70mm "kit" lens is 10 megapixels and around $500.00 depending where you shop. It has the Sony version of image stabilization (called Super SteadyShot) in the camera body and dust removal for the sensor. It can use every Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985 and they will have the benefit of being stabilized.The Pentax K10D with 18-55mm "kit" lens is 10 megapixels and around $600.00 depending where you shop. Pentax also incorporates their Image Stabilization in the camera body. Any Pentax K-mount lens, manual focus or auto focus, can be used with the K10D - and they will be stabilized. It also incorporates dust removal for the sensor.So there you have what I consider two viable alternatives. To make an informed decision, I suggest you compare the A200 and K10D side by side with the Canon XTi and Nikon D40x. IMO the camera with the most features and benefits wins but that's your decision. |
