| My fiance and I are trying to book a block of hotel rooms for our wedding. There is a city-wide convention that weekend, which obviously drives up the price of the rooms. However, I suggested to the hotel that we reserve the rooms now at the price they are offering for the convention ($210), but that we have an agreement to lower the price to a fair market rate if not all of their rooms are booked by X days before the convention. What concerns me is the reply I received: "By contract all hotels participating in the convention must keep the convention rate the lowest available rate."The hotels have raised the prices above what they normally are (by about 25%), and they have all agreed not to lower those prices in order to make any one hotel more competitive over the other.Seeing as how I have absolutely nothing to do with this convention, why should my transaction be in anyway influenced by the convention, beyond what normal market forces dictate. Is this practice legal?I'm sorry, I should have been clearer: the hotels DID all agree to set the price at $210. |

| I don't see anything illegal in the picture....You didn't say anywhere, all hotels agreed to keep the price at $210. If they did, that would be a price control. Instead, they agreed to make the convention rate the lowest of their own rates. Which means, hotels are free to set their own rate, except, what they are charging the convention goers must be the lowest. All I see is a simple matter of market pricing based on demand. |
