| I've read lots on here recently, mostly in brides' answers to questions, about the first dance happening before the dinner at the reception. I've been to over 20 weddings, and have never seen this - nor heard of it before. Here's a hypothetical situation - say the ceremony is at 2 p.m. (Then the bridal party goes for photographs after 3.)For the reception, usually, there's a cocktail hour - say, 5 p.m.; the wedding party arrives in time for dinner - 6 p.m., then there's a program. After that, maybe 8 p.m. or so, the cake cutting is done, then the dance begins around 8:30. The bride and groom have their first dance, then the bride/father - groom/mother dance; the bridal party, then the family members, then the full open dance for everyone. Of course these 'set' dances depends upon the individual circumstances.What's the reason for having the First Dance before dinner? |

| Whats the reason of having a dance at all? When I got married (which was two years ago so it's not like it was in 1960). We didn't have a dance or dj. We wanted people to be able to enjoy their night instead of being at our wedding from 3-10. So people left around 7:30 or 8:00. That allowed for me and my husband to go to our hotel room which had a jaz. in it. We had more fun there then on a dance floor dancing. |

| when the bridal party makes their formal entrance, announced and introduced as man and wife by the emcee or DJ or whoever at the reception, the bride and groom come in last and go straight to the dance floor and get that dance done. then do the mother/son and father/daughter dance next and halfway through, ask everyone else to get up and slow dance also. get it over with and then have dinner. |

| In New York, I've really only seen it as usually one of the first things that happen AFTER the cocktail hour. The first dances are done, couples are invited onto the floor, and during that time, the waitstaff is putting out your salads on the tables. The DJ tells everyone that salads are being served and that they can go sit and eat.It just seems to keep the flow of the wedding going and gets you to do as much dancing as possible. |

| I've seen it done both ways.I like the idea of doing the dance before dinner, right after the couple's introduction. Then you are seated for dinner. It opens the dance floor then so people can dance as they finish with dinner. You can have a bridal party dance as dinner is wrapping up or do the other ceremonial dances then. Sometimes if you wait until after dinner to do the first dance, the party never really gets started. By the time you get through all the dances, it's almost time for the reception to end. |

| Your suppose to dance with who ever gives away first >like dad, oldest brother , uncle,< then your Husband after that so it symbolizes the first dance then everyone can dance after. |

| Ive never ever seen it dont before the meal! Only ever after all the proceedings & just as the disco/band begin. Afterall... its called the FIRST dance! |

| What are you talking about program?Do you hire actors or singers???Where I come from the dancing would start at 6:00 in your senario. And dinner music would be played from say 6:30-7:30 so people could eat. |

| Maybe it is regional. I am from New Jersey (NY Metro area).EVERY wedding I have ever attended, the bride & groom are not present during the cocktail hour then guests tend to be encouraged to take their seats, the wedding party is introduced, the bride & groom are introduced, and they immediately do their first dance.It is always like the "kick off" of the dancing/party.Sometimes dancing is done for a little while before dinner, sometimes its just the first dance then dinner is served. |

| I dont think its regional, I think a lot fo it goes according tot he timing the hall gives you, when the meal will be served, etc. I live in Buffalo and I've seen a lot of wedding where the DJ introduced the couple, and as they came out they started the song for their first dance. Ive also been to plenty where they start the dancing after the meal. |
