I've been invited to an evening wedding (5pm)and the invitation says formal attire. Does this mean black tie?

Formal means suitIf you aren't sure as to what kind of suit, call the bride or groom and ask!

Not necessarily -- if they meant black tie, they would have mentioned it.An evening wedding calls for a nice dark suit, but since they said formal, they probably would like a tux, and ladies should wear long dresses. Black tie means tails. 5 PM is a little early for black tie -- it's usually after 7, so a tux should be fine. Check with your local tux shop or bridal shop for advice. Different areas of the country have different levels of formality
