I'm starting slow just to give me something to do. I have made 3 other wedding cakes for close friends and family. What are some general rules for pricing, delivery, how do you bake for tastings??? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. How far in advanced can you make the cake??

well, if your new at this...most grocerie stores start cost @ 1.60 a slice or per person around here (SD) maybe go a bit lower. charge nothing for delivery if it is in the same town and $20 within 20 miles. $35 if more miles away. Drive slow, aviod bumps (but you knew that) For tastings, bake 1/4 of the normal recipie, or an 8th. If you bake, you know how to do that also. I would not make the cake any more than 36 hrs before the morning of the wedding, no frosting prior to 18hrs. depending on if its butter cream or fondant, you may want to wait a bit longer before applying it to the cake. Good Luck! were are you located?

I'm doing the same but with invitations and programs and such.. For right now just to get business in the door, I just did it at cost and maybe a bit for profit. Now I'm working on a color brochure and even getting into bridal expos.. Search around on the internet for prices and ideas.. The internet is your biggest competitor... Good luck!

Offer your services on places like craigslist. Do some research and call some local bakeries to get price quotes. Most have a standard per slice price for a basic cake that is either frosted or rolled fondant, with minimal decorations. Any additional decoration adds to the per slice cost. I say start around $1.50 - $2 per slice and depending on the amount of detial go up from there. for tastings you can bake several small rounds of different cake flavors you proide, freeze them (but dont hold onto them for too long few days in the freezer max) then the morning of the tasting frost or fill with the flavors they plan to taste that day. Remmeber things like cream cheese frosting, and fruits needs to be refridgerated so dont make that too far in advance. Also for flavors sake i wouldnt suggest making the cake more then a day in advance, other wise it can dry out

i do wedding cakes at a grocery store in nw pa. our prices start out at $2.50 per serving, a filling other than icing is $.50 extra per serving. we charge a delivery and set-up fee starting at $25. we rent pillars, stands, and fountains. cake toppers, gumpaste flowers, fresh flowers, and the rented items are extra. we don't do fondant and if we did the price for those cakes would be more. we bake our cake no more than a week ahead of time and i do cakes for saturday weddings friday nights, usually. i don't do alot of tastings, most people have had our cake and that's why they come to us or they were recomended to me by one of the area's wedding venues. but if they do want a tasting we have the basic flavors and fillings on hand so they are not a problem for us. advice, make sure you give yourself enough time to get the cake done and put it in a fridge over night. they travel much better when they have had a chance to settle and get below room temp.

Where and How to Start?
There’s so much to do, it can be mind-numbing. Don’t worry. I planned and held my first wedding in two months and my second wedding in three months. If you have the luxury of a year or more, feel lucky!
Wedding Invitation
Ideally, invitations should be mailed out 6-8 weeks before the big day to give guests time to make arrangements to attend and RSVP back to you.
Wedding Attire
Where I come from, buying a tuxedo is virtually unheard of. Renting is probably the way to go to realize the ultimate savings on the groom’s attire.
Wedding Flowers
Cheap doesn't mean that your wedding flowers can't be beautiful. All flowers are lovely no matter what they cost.
Wedding Ceremony Decoration
Most wedding ceremonies are short and sweet, so why spend a majority...
Wedding Music
Music for your wedding ceremony could consist of live or recorded performances.
Wedding Photography
Pictures are priceless, and you want to be sure you have plenty of good pictures of your special day.
Wedding Favors
Some brides don’t like the idea of giving gifts to her guests, but we think it’s a nice gesture as a thank you...
Wedding Food
Wedding food can take a huge chunk out of your wedding budget.
Wedding Cake
Your wedding cake is the centerpiece of the reception. It is a scrumptious dessert as well as part of a tradition
Wedding Party
The question of whether or not to serve alcohol at your wedding is one that can cause dissension in the ranks of family.
