| They didn't add light to the photo, they just desaturated it (that's under the second tab over, when you pull it down you will see hue/saturation, use that to take the saturation down) and then they increased the contrast, under that same tab (that's what helps make the shadows so defined). You can also get that effect by using the curves tool(also under the second tab over), and darkening the shadows (but that's really hard to explain: basically, open curves, click to make a dot in the bottom left square, about in the middle, and then use your down arrow to pull it down a few times.)To get that soft look, open the effects tab and go to blurs, then gaussian blur. Do the default. Then go to the edit tab and select 'fade gaussian blur' and take that down to about 15-25 percent. That will help make the lines soft, blur a little, etc.I hope that wasn't too confusing. I have photoshop at work but not at home so I can't check to make sure what tab contrast, curves, etc is under, so just explore! |

| The first photo has a light behind the dancers and is not done in photoshop. This is a classic example of a backlit photo. If the original was in color, then yes, it has been converted to black and white using one of many tools for desaturation. The preferred method (for versions up to CS2) is using a channel mixer adjustment layer. In version CS3 there is an excellent new black and white conversion tool with sliders to adjust the image. In the second photo, if you want a soft focus effect one tool is using the blur filter. In all versions of Photoshop (except Elements) it is located in the Filter Menu -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur...CS3 allows you to make this a smart filter and is one of the reasons to upgrade. |
