i'm seventeen, and i've had about two years of learning about photography independently. i currently work as a part-time photographer for commercial products for a small company, and shoot with a canon 40D (though for a long time i only used a powershot!) i've done a lot of journalistic shots for the school paper, and i'm quite known for having a very good photographic eye around here. i mostly focus on artistic photography, but there is a potential for me to photograph some local (but quite large) indoor events soon. i was thinking of $20-40/hr? i have no idea if that's too much or too little.oops, sorry! i should've mentioned that i shoot digital images, and that i would provide the organizers with about 150 digital images (edited) after the event.

Oohh...NO! I am getting married this summer and i am paying a girl 100 an hour..and that is the cheapest i found. I am getting all the copies with no copyright. If you are wanting to just give them the film for them to develope at their expense i would say around 50-80 dollars an hour...hope this helps!

I think your asking price is fair. It sounds like you're still a novice.

20-40? I'm on the other side of the world with a lot more schooling and experience but I wouldnt charge any less than $us100 per hour. 20-40 sounds like far to little unless your really average.a

I'm with Ant on this one... but with a little twist. Think of a number - seriously! - i.e. if you don't do it who else will and what will they pay them?? If they pay you $20 and you do 2 hours work + 4 hours editing for 150 images that makes... a few cents per picture!! If you're a charity why not do it for free... ?Once you have your magic figure go and ask them what their budget is... explain that (in my case anyway) I'd be likely to spend 3-5 times the labour in editing and post production compared to shooting. Your age is in my view irrelevant - 17 or 71 your clients pay on the quality of your work, and you need to think very differently about charging. When you're 21 will you want a mortgage, kids, a new camera system, a studio, lighting, a life!!?? Think of that and then add in holidays and food... it should tell you how much you NEED to charge per week (as a minimum). Now add on a profit margin - and include the fact that you won't work every hour that God sends and you'll need to build up a cash cushion for the times you don't get the work in.Finally go in for the negotiation bearing your figures and your justification - ask their budget and tell them what you want... a bit more research into what everyone else charges will also be useful:Time spent in reconnaissance is never wasted!Good luck.

if your work is good I'd say $500 for 4 hour shoot, not including the album or proofs

Tell them higher, they will want to negotiate with you, start at $150 per hour, that will give you some wiggle room on your price. The thing that most photographers out of business is not a lack of skill or talent but a lack of business knowledge. If they get you down to $20.00 per hour thats what you wanted anyway, and if they don't go that low, thats more butter on your bread!

That price seems just about right, taking your age and experience into account. What kind of indoor events are you going to shoot? Sports...? Don't charge as much as a professional photographer would, mostly because if you don't bring in the best shots you can, it would feel kind of awkward asking for $100 an hour.

I charge $100 an hour, and usually have a minimum number of hours that must be purchased(say 3 hours). Depending on the shoot and the complexity, if they need/want more coverage I sometimes will give a bit of a discount on the hourly, but not by much. The big thing to remember, is that the longer they have you at their event, the less time you'd have for another job, if one happens to be scheduled for that day. that doesn't happen to me very often, but it can.
