I cant afford a digital slr type camera, but something smaller that can actually focus on close up. I have started selling on ebay and i am constantly dissapointed with my pictures from a sellers point of view and from my end when buying. I sell mostly hand tools at the moment and i need something that will focus on name stamps and small details of each item. I own a VIVICAM 5199 (5mp) which is ok for the outdoor pics, but poor for decent close up stuff, any advice or info on a better camera would be great, i have a budget of about a £100, at least 5mp and something that is inbetween a small compact and a slr would be ideal. thankyou!!

A 5 megapixel SONY will take pictures close up --within inches. My suggestion would be to go to the stores and take an SD or MS card with you (Sony uses MS cards) and take the same close up picture with a number of different cameras. I bought a 6 megapixel HP camera for $80 that takes excellent close up pictures within 12 inches. Most of the time, the problem isn't the camera, it's the person who is trying to focus. Most people can't hold their hand steady enough to be able to wait the seconds required to process the digital picture. Before you buy another camera, try this:Get a tri-pod and attach your camera to it. Then experiment with lighting to ensure that you have sufficient light on the area where you're going to take the picture. You can do this by using whatever it is you want to get the detail on and then take a bunch of pictures with the light at various angles. It's probably better not to use flash as it generally blocks out part of the picture, especially if you have stamps in plastic protective sheets. Tilt the camera down on the tripod so it focuses close enough to whatever it is you want to capture. Sometimes it's a good idea to put the item on a black piece of paper or, if it's a darker stamp, place it on a dull white piece of paper. Make sure the picture is in focus using the buttons on your camera to bring the image closer or further away. Since you are selling hand tools -- do you have a portalign? It's a kind of stand that has a big circle that clamps onto a drill to help people drill straight holes in wood. If you have one of those, you can use that to hold your camera and it adjusts up and down so you can set it at the distance you need to get a clear picture. If the tools are shiny, you need to ensure that the light is behind the camera to prevent shine. Experiment. I have an old 4 megapixel Sony that claims we can't take pictures further than a foot away (according to its own instructions) but I have taken extraordinary detailed pictures as close as 2 inches. The problem with that wonderful camera is that it only uses the old memory sticks -- the purple ones and it is next to impossible to find those today. Further, the biggest memory stick it used was 256 mb and the new ones use 1gb or more. Needless to say, the higher the resolution, the more memory you need to get the detail, but I've gotten the tiniest detail using that old SONY.Again, try the things I mentioned above and if that still doesn't work, take something to a store along with your own SD card and try out the cameras. You can get a good digital camera for $50 on sale because newer models have replaced it. However, it will still take excellent pictures and if you learn the tricks, you can save a bundle.

They all take very good close up pictures. Does your VIVICAM 5199 have a MACRO setting?? If it does that is what you need to take the closeup photos you require. If it doesn't you need to get a camera that does.

Your camera may or may not have a macro mode setting. Which is the picture of a little flower. Turn it to that mode dial setting and you should be able to take close up pictures really well. no need to have to buy another camera!
