| i just bought a Nikon D80 and i am looking to buy a good lens for it.i originally wanted to buy the 18-200mm because of its good reviews and flexibility, but i am running on a bit of a budget at the moment..Should i go for the 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF for 150$ or the 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED AF for twice the price?or should i just buy the 55-200mm VR for around 350$?i know i could get the 18-55mm lens for a decent price from the person i purchased my d80 from.. so instead of saving for the 18-200mm would it be a better idea to just get the two seperate lenses (18-55 and 55-200?) for a cheaper price?i also heard that the 55-200 wasnt very good for nature photography...are there any other lenses out there for a decent price with decent image quality and flexibility for candid,outdoor,nature, portrait, general photography? |

| hey there, Quick bit of help... or not! - i bought the F70-300mm for my nikon, and its brill, but it works with my digital too so dont necessarily pay the prices for the D70-300mm as most nikon lenses work from a film lens to a digital. Also there are plenty of non brand lenses out there for a quarter of the price and they do a great job too, people always dismiss them for thier own brand, but they are just as good, hope this helps. |

| You pretty much have researched all the lenses.It is much more convenient to use the 18-200mm than the two you listed, but in the end you will have the same coverage ...The reason it is suggested that the 55-200mm is not that good for nature work has to do with its focal length, not because it is a poor lens, in fact the 55-200mm VR is an excellent telephoto zoom.When you look at the photo equipment that the nature photographers use, you will see their lenses start at 300mm and go up from there. My ex is a nature photographer and her lenses are 105mm macro, 400mm, 500mm and 600mm lenses. She uses a 20mm for her landscapes, but that is a different story. She is still a purest and uses a Nikon F5, so has not been seduced into the digital world |
