I have a new Canon Rebel xti. My first DSLR, so technically I am a beginner. I am constantly investing loads time and research into different methods of photography, and basically learning everything I can about the advanced shooting techniques and putting that into constant practice. I have read, and reread, and read some more through the manual as well as many different sites. I've come across the AE and FE lock features, and I have basic knowledge of what they do, but would like to know what a real example of using them would be. What is the significance of using them, and how is the best way to utilize this feature? My photos mostly consist of macro, outdoor, and action - I do want to learn all styles - but how would this feature apply right now to the types of photos I am taking?

AE lock lets you meter from a midtone (either a studio greycard or paving slab or grass) lock the exposure then recompose your shot.The benefit of this is that the camera isn't fooled by very dark or very bright subjects, by metering from a midtone (which the camera is calibrated for) you have a better chance of an even exposure.The Rebel XTi has a partial metering mode, so if you set this then the midtone area only has to be a small area in the picture.
