Don't worry about it. My son didn't start talking until he was 2 1/2, now he won't shut up. You can't compare him to others. Some talk alot, some not at all. All kids develop differentlyHe'll talk when he's ready.

i know exactly how you feel bc my son is almost 2 as well (20months) and he is kind of in the same boat he just started talking a little more but i asked my dr and talked to a peditrician and they said it completly normal you are doing the right thing by reading and flash cards, i would also try interacting him more in simple things you do like saying what your doing and what your holding just to get his attention and see what word is linked to what object, like i said dont worry stick it out a little bit and if you still conserned in a couple months you can always go back. my dr also told me boys usually dont start really talking until after age of two

My advice is to speak with your family doctor again. My son (turned 2 in Dec) is not speaking words (makes all kinds of sounds/babbling & gestures) and also not eating solid foods (will eat only mushy food and prefers Gerber Baby Food.) My doctor was not overly concerned when I had talked to her last fall, but went ahead and referred him for both the eating & speech therapy. As it turns out, it's about sensory & motor skills focused on oral/mouth applications. It's not a reflection on you as a parent if your child needs any kind of therapy and it's for them in the long run. The best age for therapy between the ages of 2 and 3 years old as well, so don't just think it will go away or right itself if you are concerned. It's hard to know why some kids have a hard time reaching some developmental milestones and others don't. Our daughter hit all the milestones as expected, but our son has been delayed in the 2 areas described before. It is good that you are concerned and keep watching and working with him. Better to realize there may be an issue instead of ignoring it.

I am not only a mother, but a 2nd year student (Speech Therapy)Its still too early to freak out. I am sure the SLP did a hearing screening so I am not worried about his hearing. How's his receptive language? Does he smile and babble and understands what you are saying? Like milk, do you want milk?Kids go through this rapid change right at 2 years. It's amazing but true. My son went through that... And I can't get him to stop talking now ;)Good advice a professor told me once is that kids dont walk and talk at the same time. Either you have an early talker or an early walker. My son wasn't an early walker, but he was an early talker.I would just wait and see... don't do flashcards... don't frustrate your child. Talk and sing... Singining little songs help. My son started actually talking with the Baby Elmo dvds... They really target the young toddlers. We also made place mats at the table (very easy, publisher and laminate them) with cartoons and really cool stuff and we used that as a subject to talk about and play with)Good Luck
