I would love to try my hand at my daughters wedding cake. (Plenty of practice first obviously). I like anything artistic and detailed. I love doing birthday cakes, but only for family. So I wondered whether it would be possible to learn about cake decorating from books or whether it would be better to find an evening course somewhere. There seems to be so much on the market these days to do with certain icings for this and that. It looks daunting.

I taught myself too. How much time do you have ? ...Get some cake decorations books from the library, get the materials you need, make lists of what you need...then practice, practice, practice. Just like learning to play the piano or sewing. You have to acquire the control of your hands to do the designs you want to make.An evening class at the adult school would help, at least to get familiar with the materials you'll need to get started.

I'm not a cake decorator but my mom's friend is. She works at a power plant, and she has her own business and she went to like1 course a week for a year.

You can teach yourself, there are loads of books on sugar craft work. I did a short course at my local college as i thought it would look good on my resume, was a chef at the time. lol. The courses are good tho as you can see what other people are doing and get ideas from them. And also ask for help if something goes wrong! lolThe only thing i didnt like was how expensive some of the tools were to buy. But i didnt thiink to go on the internet at the time so i suppose that was my fault lol

I took the Wilton class and learned so much more than I could have on my own. Michaels usually offers the classes, but here is the site to find a location nearest to you:http://www.wilton.com/classes/classlocator.cfm

I done the same thing for my daughters wedding i found a twelve week course & i made the flowers & three tiers it was lovely. It is not hard just do it for family as you would not make any money out of it you can put a lot of hours into it. You could try getting a few books it is so simple you will need all the equipment as well. If you are artistic. I make all my own curtains greetings cards. Have a go you will feel so pleased with your self. Take lots of photos as well.
