| I teach business English in Germany, and the majority of my classes are one on one, and some of my students would like to focus mainly on vocabulary. Sometimes I have them read a challenging article, and have them highlight the words that they have problems with, and after we've read we discuss these words in their context. Then the following week, I'll bring in a review sheet with flash cards. However, this process is a bit uninteresting for them and for me, and I was wondering if anyone out there has a really interesting and exciting way to teach vocabulary? Most of my students are basic, pre-intermediate to advanced. Any and all advice from any sort of teacher would be great appreciated and welcomed!EDIT: I'd like to teach all vocabulary, not just business, as some of my students need to build their active vocabulary in all areas, not just business. | I've taught English in Japan for 3 years.One method that worked really well is this site's conversation questions lists.http://iteslj.org/questions/I go through the lists (skipping lame questions) and keep notes on areas they get stumped on. It's very natural because we're not introducing random vocab lists, they're trying to pull new words out of their head, and it's this need that translates to the expansion of his/her vocabulary.Or better yet, do a mock interview with "common interview questions" lists that you find on the web.Have fun! |

| Jut teach them the usual bullsh.. business cliches. You know the ones; 'Blue Sky Thinking', 'Going Forward', 'Think Outside the Box' etc. etc. |

| Natalia,One thing you might try is have them right a story using those same words they have problems with. If they had a thesaurus, they could look up alternative words for the 25 cent ones. That way they'll know what the meaning is. What I used to do when teaching my writing classes (I only did this a few months out of the year), is have one person start off the story and pass it back to the next person behind them. Each person should be directed to use one of those words. That way you can see how well they use them in everyday language. You can use this method for both business and all other areas.It's just a thought, but remember, I'm not a licensed teacher as you are. You seem like one busy person other there in Germany. I like you method of asking questions. It shows that if you don't know an answer you will certainly find it. Good luck in whatever advice you take. PJ M |
