I have a point & shoot digital (Canon Powershot A85) but have been looking at getting a nicer D SLR. I find the point & shoot limiting because it functions poorly in low-light situations (without flash, the images are dark - but the flash when used is too harsh and just as unflattering). I am also thinking the better quality lens would be worth the upgrade. What about not having zoom capability - do you find trading off zoom function for the regular lens is worth it? I don't want links to review sites - just your own words whether or not you like your Olympus - I have been looking at the E510 type. I guess this question also goes for Nikon D40,60 etc.

I have an older Olympus E-300. I love it. The camera takes great images and responds well. The E-300 does not have image stabilization. I am saving for the E-510 myself, with the in body stabilization, all the lenses will be anti-shake. All of the lenses for Olympus were designed for digital cameras from the ground up and produce better results. I use my Olympus when I go places knowing I'll be taking pictures, like the Mardi Gras world in New Orleans or to the state park. It produces great images and has worked without defect in the 2 1/2 years I have it. Check out the review and see the sample images at http://www.dpreview.com/. Olympus really is a great camera company, they have been for decades. You can get a pop up diffuser for the flash (for most DSLR's). This will reduce the harsh light and produce better images.
