We can text our boss early if we need to, she prefers that. I don't know in your case, I guess she wants an actual call.

When you are sick, you have to physically use the telephone. I have never heard of a company that will accept e-mails for calling out sick.If you don't get a hold of someone, as in your boss, you leave a message, but you must try to call back anyway. You must talk with someone to let them know what is going on. E-mails will not cut it.

Unless your work is done at home and ALL business communication is via email --- unless there's some outstanding reason you can't, use the telephone. Email really isn't acceptable for business communication.

A phone call insures direct contact; you either speak to the person or leave a message. Employers are far more likely to check phone messages early in the morning if they think they may have missed a call such as one calling in sick, than to check email. I am a teacher, and we always must call in to say if we are not going to be able to make it. It's possible our principal is out when we call, but he knows to check his phone messages. We had an instance where a new teacher used email to let the boss know she wouldn't be in; he did not see it in time to replace her, and that created quite a problem. Other things can cause an email message not to make it through; don't rely on them when it's critical.
