Our 5 year anniversary is next year and since we never had a real wedding, we want to renew our vows in the church with cake, pictures and all our family. Okay, I know it's not a huge affair, don't expect gifts, drawn out ceremonies and lots of attendants and flair but what about out of town guests? Are we supposed to pick up our relatives hotel stays? And if so for how long if say they are coming down for the event plus a few days to visit with other family? Any advice on how to do the reception? What sort of entertainment should we plan for?...a band, arranged cd's, etc? And lastly, can you think of any expenses we may not have already thought of. I don't want to get in over my head without planning for this thing. It's still a year away but we've already reserved the location. I guess we just want to know what our social obligations are compared to a first time big wedding. Thank you!!!

No you are not technically supposed to pick up the out of town guests hotel bills unless you want to and are financially able to do so. But you might want to contact a hotel and see if you can reserve a block of rooms at a discount rate for your guests and then refer then to that hotel. If you want to keep down expenses think about not having a whole meal but a dessert buffet under the whole idea of "we have got to the sweetest part of our marriage and want to celebrate that with you." Since it is a vow renewal you could have a band or a DJ, whichever you think would be more fun. Just remember this is a time not to get bogged down with details but to look forward to having fun. You could probably have a late afternoon or early evening vowel renewal, have a nice dessert buffet and a great band and party the night away. It will strike the perfect chord between a ceremony and a party. Have fun.
