I attended a wedding, and they anounced a money dance. Where if you wanted to dance with the bride or groom, you had to pay them! Why not just pass a hat or sit there with a card board sign "Will Marry for food"?I got dressed up, took time out, bought them a present, and they want me to pay them to dance?Needless to say, I sat that out!

There appear to be some regions or cultures that this is very common. Its not in my family or where we are from, but there are still plenty of people that do it.

Sometimes it is a part of someone's culture and I can respect that.Sometimes people are just greedy and see their wedding as a way of raising money - that is what would make me angry.

I've only been to one wedding where they had the money dance and the bride was haitian the groom was african. It was his culture tradition, they also changed into african outfits to do the dance. Every other weddings i've been to i've never heard of a money dance.

It's a tradition. You can spare a dollar, c'mon. It's all in fun, see where you can pin the dollar to make a funny (i.e. pin the groom's pantleg up...)

The optional wording here is "If you wanted". It's one dollar, it's one dance out of the whole reception and it's not like they told you if you didn't then you were being asked to leave. Sit back, enjoy your free dinner, your free booze and sit it out... like you did.Where's the problem?

Where I come from I have never been to a wedding that didn't have a "dollar dance" I dont think it is greedy, so what you dressed up and went to their wedding. They paid probably close to $10,000.00 so you could come and eat, and dance, and take home a little favor...they have a right to ask for some money. Not to mention they are just starting out, they point is to give the bride and groom a little cash boost!

I wouldn't do it. I think after the bridal shower and wedding gifts it would be enough. I know the point is to make sure the young couple starts off on a good foot but I think it becomes a bit too muchafter you has spent over $100 on the couple.

This is common in my region, and I have never met anyone who has frowned upon it...but I have heard many people on here talk about it's tackiness.I would say that in my region, if you do or do not have a money dance no one will take much notice either way. So, may as well do it (I live NC but other weddings I have seen this were in VA and WV). It is not really frowned upon because it is a quick dance and it is completely optional, and up to you on what amount you give if any. I highly doubt that these couples are making out with much money during a 3 minute song, and if they are then the gifter had probably come to the event with plans to give them this money to begin with. Relax.

you know, Im getting married and any money that we recieve as a gift will go towards a buying a house. I cant tell you how many people said "Oh, do a dollar dance!!" I agree with you! Dont get me wrong, we need all of the money we can get, but I wont beg my guests and make them feel obligated to get it!! I guess its a tradition to help the bride and groom in thier new life together and you know, its only $1 but I think its very tacky! I REALLY dont want to do it at my wedding...its not bad enough that I cant dance if my life depended on it, but my guests will be paying me to do it! Like the others said, it is a regional thing. I like in the midwest and EVERY wedding has a dollar dance. In the st louis area, its as common as mostaccioli. Its a fun thing that the guests actually enjoy doing....but not at my wedding! Sorry, but I think this is a tradition that will have to die out with the wedding of mine and my fiance's mothers! If I were you, in the future, just attend, bring a gift (like you said you did) and sit it out! Try to snag a dance with the bride (if you want to) -before- this awful tradition starts!

It's a Polish tradition. Some areas of the country do it, and others have never heard of it.My family does it, but I think it's tacky, so I didn't have it at my wedding.Relax...roll with the punches...it's like $1 for a dance, not $20. And if you don't want to pay, you don't have to dance.

It can be seen as tacky, but it seriously comes from tradition, just like other funny games at weddings.

Gosh, glad you're not coming to my wedding...you seem very close minded! Everyone has there opinions but if you spent ALL THAT MONEY--I'm sure you can spare another dollar.I personally didn't want this dance BUT my Fiance is adamant that we do! We'll see....

I don't understand the "money dance" at all and think it's in poor taste, but there are plenty of people who choose to do it (usually for the getting money factor and not out of custom). Luckily, I've never been to a wedding where they did do the dance (or at least I didn't stay long enough to witness it), and we definitely didn't do it at our wedding.

i am not going to have a money dance at my wedding but i am a little tired of people criticizing others that do. they are not asking you for hundreds of dollars, it is 1 freaking dollar! if they think that it is fun, who cares. i really doubt they are trying to rob peoples pockets for a bloody dollar. i dont personally like it but i dont really care what other people do.
