I was told to get 9 inch plates for my wedding reception, but when I talked to my caterer, who is also my cousin, he told me the get 71/2 inch plates. He told me that the food is there to give them something to eat not to get them stuffed or full, and I agree with him. Well I went on Ebay and there is a seller who has a great deal on plates but the plates are 7 inches. Would this be too small. Im going to have regular food, but there will be a few finger foods. I wouldn't want to get 9 inch plates because each person might get too much food and then throw it away, and I want everybody to get something to eat.

I have never heard of having 7" plates or 7-1/2" plates for that matter unless you were only having appetizers. For a regular dinner, buffet or otherwise I would go for the standard 9".

since your guests are obviously serving themselves i would go for the smaller plates, its impossible to stand around with a 9" plate, the 7" will be perfect, those who want 2nds can go back, its a wedding not a chow downgo with your 7" plates

Go with your 7 inch plates, because if they want more food, they will make another trip to the table. Best wishes on your marriage.

7.5 inch plates are really small!!! That's like an appetizer plate. I think your caterer (and cousin) is leading you astray.People do expect to be full. You are providing a meal, not hors d'oeuvre. Even as a small woman, I can eat a 9'' plate of food.

Hi and congratulations on your upcoming wedding. It depends on what time your reception is and what types of food you are serving. A 7 or 71/2 inch plate would be good for a dessert reception or an early afternoon reception with appetizers and finger foods. You said you are serving "regular" food? If so, I totally disagree with your cousin. People are going to take what they want no matter the size of the plate. If you have really small plates, some may end up taking 2 plates! At least they would where I live.If your reception is at a regular meal time (lunch - between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.) or dinner (between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.), then I would get the bigger 9 inch plates. You can find great deals on these at many places.

Do they have 8 inch plates? Be right in the middle lol7 inch plates make more sense, like you said, people usually don't realize how much food their getting and then don't eat it all.

If you are getting plates for appetizers, 7 inch is fine. If you are serving a meal, get bigger plates.People do expect to eat (and be full/satisfied) at a wedding when the timing is during a mealtime. As my previous statement - if this is for appetizers, small plates are OK.

Yes, that's too small. You need to go with a 9.25 or 9.75 regular dinner plate.

why does it matter if the plates are too big? your not eating the plate, your eating the food on it, if the plate is bigger the the portion then so what.If the plate is too small on the other hand then you cant fit the food on it.www.my-wedding-reception.com

If you are having a dinner, 7 inch plates are way too small. 9 inch plates will suit just fine. If you have 9 in plates, people will most likely fill up once and be done. If you have the smaller plates, then people will have to fill up twice and then end up eating more than if there was only one plate full.
