For brides on a tight budget who want a coordinator - Would you hire a professional event planner with 2 years experience, but no wedding experience, for an extremely discounted fee (either free or maximum 5% of the total cost) in exchange for a testimonial to improve their portfolio and client list? The planner just started their own business, and you would be one of their first clients on their own. They have proven knowledge of the wedding industry after an lengthly interview. What do you say?I should add that I would actually be using the planner's "day of" coordinator services, which she wouldn't charge me for (the 5% would be in she did the whole shebang). Even though I'm on a tight budget, and am an extremely organized person (I have everything planned to the minute), the last thing I want to be worried about on the day of my wedding is how fast the centerpieces are being assembled. There's no question about hiring a coordinator at all, it's just a matter of this particular one.

I would do it. especially since you will be the one telling them what you want and dont want. also you will be giving them ideas about everything and could even show them pictures. It would help just to have someone there to give you the extra help that you will need so that you can relax a little more on your wedding day.I just got one on friday, my moh isnt helping me do anything and I was extremely stressed, I was trying to figure out how to do everything by myself. I have everything booked, picked out and all the ideas and pictures of everything. I just need someone to mandate everything that day for me. and best of all she is doing it for free because she is a friend. (we are going to get her a special gift-because she wont take any money from us-we offered)

I would ask them to do a idea board for your wedding of what your vision is and see if it matches what you want or if it is close then you know they are on the same page! I am having a terrible time with my planner with lots of experience! She has become wishy washy and started telling fibs to get out of doing things she doesnt want to do. I had a good repore with her at first then she was telling me I could not have anything the way I wanted and changing what she would do! So I am thinking of not going with her, I have not made the deposit yet. I wish you the best of luck!

Go for it. You say you had a lengthy interview and that the coordinator demonstrated knowledge of the wedding industry, so why not? It certainly sounds like the price is right. One of the most valuable things a coordinator provides is inside knowledge of and good working relationships with caterers, venues, printers, entertainers, etc. I would think there would be a lot of crossover in these areas between wedding planning and general event planning, so the coordinator's 2 yrs of experience will come in handy. They just may not have as many suggestions when it comes to wedding specifics like favors or the order of events. Be prepared to help fill in the gaps with pics and ideas from magazines and websites like this one! Smile

It sounds like a good way to go and they will work hard to get good testimonial. It better than having a freind do it or doing all the work your self. Good Luck!

to be honest, no. I wouldnt hire a coordinator at all, let alone one with no wedding experience. If you're on a budget, I dont believe you need the use of a coordinator, you can just do it yourself. Im sure she is knowledgable but after reading a few books, you can be too! The best thing you can do if you're on a budget is buy a wedding planner book and do it yourself.

I don't know. 5% of my budget is $1,000. I'd rather spend the grand on transporting my bridal party to/from the wedding than on a coordinator. But I'm a very organized person. Its 18 months til the wedding and I've got darn near everything planned out already.

I did the exact same thing;I was a bit fearful; but here's what I did & some pointers that can help you. We got married in the Islands. And we had our reception once we returned. So I pratically planned the entire reception myself; all the way up to booking my vendors etc, once that was done that's when I turned everything over to her. The only thing our coordinator had to be worried was with the time line; it made it easy on her...just reassuring that things flowed...so just go ahead and continue planning - once finished give her all your contact/vendor info and all you have to do is show up:) congrats!!!

Yes I would do it. I like to help out people when I can, and you will probably find that she will work harder for you then most of the established coordinators because she is trying to make a name for herself.
