My husband and I got married in November 2007. We didn't tell anyone until after our ceremony. Obviously a lot of people were shocked and offended that we did not include them. The reason we didn't include the family is because we had not been dating long, my family is very gossipy and negative, and we just thought we would rather deal with all the negativity AFTER our ceremony rather than have it be ruined by all the drama. In addition, we were broke...we wanted to get married for the right reasons and not have all the stress. We would like to have a 'wedding' reception/celebration on our one year anniversary. So, my questions are:1. What is the ettiqette (sp) for this? Is it totally improper or will people appreciate the inclusion?2. How should we word this on the invitations? It will be formal, at a banquet hall w/ DJ and photographer, etc...3. Did you or anyone you know have a late reception? If so, how did it go? Any miscellaneous tips? Thanks

Many people who get married abroad have receptions later (like people who decide to mary in the carribbean). You make up invitations like you would the wedding but have something in it like "Jane and John have tied the knot and what to celebrate with you"and then place the date, time location and whatnot on the invite.

I would probably call it an Anniversary party, rather than a wedding reception. It can be formal or not, but I wouldn't do it just to get gifts/money. Celebrate your 1 year anniversary in style. If you took pictures of your actual wedding or have a video (I don't know if just went a JP or if you went to Vegas and eloped), you can show that and just expect to have friends/family celebrate with you.

When you have a private ceremony and then plan on having a reception later to include guests, it is normally done within about a month's time. So, to have a "reception" a year later is really not an option in terms of what you call the celebration. Have all the other elements you want-cake, DJ. photog, etc. but you need to call it what it really is-an anniversary party. So, on the invites, I would say something like:Please join us Saturday, _______________at 5 o'clock in the eveningReception Hall North.................for an anniversary celebrationMr. and Mrs. ------------------

I think if people are aware you're getting married and know you don't want people present at the ceremony (some people are shy and private and also do this for your reasons), then they're OK with attending a reception and buying you a gift if it's soon after you've been married. but you can't wait until your 1 year anniv and then throw yourself a party, it's not close enough to your actual wedding.

It's pretty unusual, just call it an anniversary party.Make sure you put "No gifts, please" on the invitation.
